Re: Fuel light wont turn off
It would seem that this is a fairly common problem even with some of the Audi models. The problem is the fuel sending unit (sensor) that gives off erroneous readings. Your dashboard then displays the fuel low warning light and your fuel gauge would read low or empty. The repair of course would require direct replacement of the erring component. I would not recommend a self fix since this would involve taking off the fuel tank to gain access to the sender cover, cover/assembly and gasket removal. Perhaps your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified professional.
In some cases, thumping on the fuel tank jars the fuel sending unit back into operation but the same of course can cause it back to malfunction. This would probably explain the "...it fixed itself..."
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

is it 2.5 or 3.0 ltr petrol? if so it is fitted with saddle type fuel tank which passes over the propshaft and has 2 fuel level sensors one each side and a jet pump to transfer fuel from one side to the other, sounds like you have problem inside the fuel tank the main fuel pump side of the tank may be drying out. rh side of tank i think. hope this helps/
Being fuel injected, it would be spraying out if it were an external leak from the fuel pipes as they run under pressure. If definitely a petrol smell, I would check the top of the fuel tank where the pump fits- is it worse / same with a full tank?
Not to question you but is it a fuel smell or an exhaust gas smell? Reason for my question is that the rocams have a common weak spot of the exhaust flange sealing ring where the exhaust front pipe meets the manifold. They become worn and porous and start blowing under load or when accelerating as the motor tips back.
Mr Allan first thing you must do is to renew the fuel filter, check if there is any other filters and then if you still have any old fuel in tank drain it,fill it up with a clean diesel and my personal advice as an automotive engineer try what I do personally, ask from a petrol station if they sell- " TWO STROKE OIL " yes is the oil use in mixing with petrol for mopped motorcycles. Use 250ml in tank full of diesel ,-full tank to empty -before light comes on and re-use again 250ml for another full tank and continued for four times. It is also good to do this even for two times filling every two months,. Two Stroke Oil has the power to clean and lubricate the feeding system of a diesel engine also treats the fuel injectors even when you might hear them working rough. It is like a cough medicine. Try it and let me know.
The gauge should work with any amount of fuel and indicate how much is in the tank. What does happen on modern cars, is that the gauge will fail to move if a small amount of fuel is filled into the tank. This is a measure taken as most petrol driven vehicles have the pumps immersed in fuel, which helps cool the pump and prolongs the life of the unit. The reserve light may remain on if the fuel level has not risen above the operational level of the same warning light.
Hi there, If you can get under the car just head to the petrol tank and look for the lines running to and from the tank, There should be several thin copper looking metal tubes running from the tank to the engine bay, Generally somehwere along that line should be the fuel canister that should look almost the same as your new one, Its then a simple process of unscrewing the old one and screwing in the new one, Be aware not to use any sort of flame light ie lighter when under there as fuel will run out when you remove the old one. If its not under ther then it will be mounted in the engine bayas before just follow those tubes. You may need to turn the igition on and off a few times once installed to prime the lines if the car does not automatically do this. If it still wont start try pumping the gas/accelerator once or twice, Be carefull not to flood the car and you should be away. Hope this helps Cheers Steve
of your discription the clicking you can here is a relay and if this coincides with your starting problem i suspect this relay operates the fuel pump which brings us to the second part of the problem how full is your tank as fuel tanks have baffles in them and if your parked up hill it seems likley the petrol wont be getting over the baffles hence no petrol getting to the pump which means the relay would be working over time and thats what you can here hope this helps yates210456
hi its probably dragged sh#t from your tank, is your petrol pump external if so,so is the fuel filter. change it, its easier than trying to flush it. once thats done. foot on excelerator and turn over if problem solved car will start within 20 seconds max. if however its air locked, crack the fuel line open at the injectors and turn over with some one watching for petrol to come through as soon as it does stop and tighten up injectors, car should then start, if it still doesnt start it could be muck actually in your in injectors, they will need taking out and cleaning,,,,but we will get to that if all others fail, please let me know what happens, i hope this helps
