98 Sunfire The anti theft works off ignition switch the wires from the switch runs to the instrument cluster. To reset it you turn the key and just bump the starter and then let set for 10 min. repeat till the anti theft lite stops blinking, could take 3 or 4 times.

98 sunfire anti theft is link to the instrument cluster[ speedometer] and the ignition switch. All you need to do is turn key on and bump the starter and then the key on for 10 min. and if the antitheft lite is still blinking try it again. My take afew trys ,but it worked for me.

My problem is the same WILL NOT START. - except mine is a 98 grand prix.
I know this is going to sound SO stupid, but- what do you guys mean by "bump" the starter? Do you mean turn the key like I'm trying to start it and hold it for a second? Or actually open the hood and lightly strike the starter? I assume you mean the first one, but I just want to make sure.

I was told by a few people that my issue was caused by this: We drove to the creek to swim, and I locked the car with the keyless. Then my keys somehow got wet while I was there, and then when the keyless didn't work I used the key to unlock. People are telling me that the anti theft is acting up because supposedly if you lock with a key, you should unlock with a key, and if you lock with keyless you UNLOCK with keyless. I have a friend with the same car though (except hers is a 2003), and hers isn't like that, so why would mine be?
Anyway I'm stuck hotwiring it every time, so if you could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it!
    Thank you!

I also have a 98 sun fire and the light stays on. It happened after the battery was disconnected to change the starter and reconnected. I don't know if it matters but the car has a command start.

SOURCE: car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

SOURCE: How to remove or bypass the factory installed anti theft vehicle immobilizer.

I'm going to assume this has the VATS system with the pellet in the key. You need to know the correct resistant of the factory pellet and bypass the system using that value. A quick google search will result in many articles on how to bypass the VATS system, as it's required when installing a remote start system in most late 80s-mid 90s GM vehicles.

How to remove or bypass the factory installed anti theft vehicle immobilizer.

in the 1996 sunfire GM uses an anti theft lock system. It can be triggered by all sorts of things. In order to relinquish this you must have a key to turn the ignition. These are not coded just plain cut keys. Once you attain this you put the key in and turn the ignition to the ACC position and wait ten minutes (theft lock light will turn off), turn off and take key out. You MUST do this 3 times and then the theft lock will be disarmed.

Car won't start - anti-theft light flashing

it sounds like the immobilizer is faulty. this will shut off the electrical feed to the starter motor. you will need to take it to a garage to get this fixed.

hope this helps.

98 pontiac Sunfire shuts self off

You might not need a tumble, the sys is controled by the key, and transponder, and the ecm. Most auto locks smiths can come out and check the system, might just need a key re-programed
