Its located in the front of the engine mounted to the timing cover near the crankshaft pulley.

If you have to wait to restart its usually a faulty coil or ignition module.
Someone would need to troubleshoot the ignition system when the engine fails to start to proceed. Could be a faulty relay too.

The question is WHY you are inquiring about the crankshaft sensor. For your information, if your vehicle is equipped with the 3.0L OHV V6, it is probably a CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR & SYNCHRONIZER that needs replacing, if it exhibits the following symptoms. 1. You hear a squealing type noise that is extremely similar to, and often misdiagnosed as a belt squeal. 2. The engine runs rough, sometimes stalling. 3. If you do happen you get a P0340 CMP circuit failure code. Again, this is only common to 3.0L OHV V6s. If your vehicle is equipped with the 3.0L DOHC Duratec, disregard everything I've just posted. If you do need a new cam sensor, go to your local Ford dealer parts department to purchase it. (FORD base part numbers, 6B288 & 12A362) Hope this helps. To add to your question, ALL Taurus engines use a timing chain. It would help if you post which engine yours is equipped with. To add further to my post, if you do purchase the two aforementioned parts, the sychronizer needs to be timed the way a distributor would, during installation, failing which would result in ignition and fuel injection timing being out. a obd2 scanner

Removal 1. Remove the engine front cover. 2. CAUTION: This pulse wheel is used with several difference engines. Install the pulse wheel with the keyway in the slot stamped 30 or30 RFF only (orange in color). Remove the ignition pulse wheel.3. Install the damper bolt. 4. NOTE: LH shown, RH similar. Remove the LH and RH spark plugs.
8.80 Page 2 5. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to position the crankshaft keyway in the 11 o’clock position and position the camshafts in the correct position. This will position the number one cylinder at Top Dead Center (TDC). ^ Verify that the camshafts are correctly located. If not, rotate the crankshaft one additional turn and recheck.

You normally can find the diagram on a sticker on the underside of the hood directly above the alternator on a 3.0 OHV motor 2002 Ford Taurus. I copied one from the Internet and taped it above the headlight on my car so it was easier to view and use. Note: In the bottom of the 2.3L drawing says Trottle Position (TP) Sensor, this is wrong, It should say CKP Sensor.


2.3L Engine


The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located to the left of the crankshaft pulley.

3.0L Engine


The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located just behind the crankshaft pulley on engine block.
