At least your problem is occasional, I've had some a bunch more persistent. The computer in modern cars picks up error conditions and in some cases can reset them if they don't persist, especially if they aren't pertaining to emissions items. Therefore, it's probably not terrible.
To read these you need a scan tool. The scan tool plugs into the cars computer system on a black plug just underneath the dash just a little left or right of the steering column. It's a rectangular plug about 2 inches in width and about an inch high. You can either buy a scan tool, but that's a bit pricey if you only use it once. I would ask your friends, someone is likely to have one they would let you borrow. Also, companies like Checker Auto rents tools. Also a nice store person might even help you and run a check on it for you at the store.
You can then take the code and look it up on the internet and find a forum to help you with the issue. If you take it to a mechanic you will have the knowledge of what the problem is and put you in a better position to get the proper service.
I hope that this has helped.
