Question about 1997 Cadillac Catera

1 Answer

1997 catera On some starups( maybe 10 out of 50) the battery will not charge, lights are dim and idling is rougher. Giving it a little gas starts the charging. If you drive away without giving gas when this occurs it will not charge. Restarting starts the charging. Otherwise the charging is fine according to the gauge.. However it has gone through 3 batteries in the last 2 years.

Three things spring to mind... slipping belt,,,, voltage regulator or the alternator is going.... you can also unhook the connectors on the alternator... wirebrush them or gently sand them to ensure the best connection.... tighten them back up.... don't over tighten them as you can break a bolt off.

Robert

ps. usually the voltage regulator is built into the alternator... could be replaced seperately or you replace the whole unit.

Why does my battery keep dying in my audi 1997 a6? When it's running and the fan kicks on the voltage meter jumps down. When the lights are on and then fan kicks on my lights dim.

The battery seems to have reached end of design life. Replace. Also check charging system for voltage. With engine idling check voltage at battery terminals. It should be about 14 volts.

My ford explorer 1997 V6 4.0L my truck start but unless i press the gas but as soon as i stop giving gas the truck stop i got told i need to change my alternator because i just changed the blower motor and...

doesnt make sense, you went from giving gas to keep running ,to switching blower motor,Heater blower motor i assume? to replace alternatoer? i'm lost, blower motor has nothing to do with the motor running or not. the alternator charges the battery in which you need power to run the electronics for ignition. make sure battery has full charge. now maybe your fuel shut off switch has triped.( located on passenger side firewall inside trk. remove lower side panel and you will see a black box with a button on it it should be pressed in if it is not then no fuel is getting to engine.press and attempt to start.

Lights shine good when I am giving the engine gas - let off the accelarator and lights go dim

Your alternator maybe failing or your battery. You can have both checked at Auto Zone/Schuck's/NAPA/Chieif's for free.

2003 montero sport. will not idle since battey boost

sit with foot on gas at steady 3000 rpm, then turn on all your lights, hazard warning lights, heater, and window defrost, if the power drops , then you need a new battery....sometimes the battery power can control the engine idle, the alternator is only for charging the battery, not for running the cars electrics, this is the battery's job

My lights started going dim on the dash. the voltage kight started comeing on and then the warning sign came on check chargeing system

You need a new alternator. Also check to be sure that your serpentine belt didnt break. The car was not charging the battery (either the belt broke or the alternator is bad) and running entirely off the battery causing the lights to dim and the voltage light and check charging system lights to come on. Good luck to you. Thanks for using fixya!

Sincerely,

JC

1997 catera

well Marie the reason your vehicle is acting this way is because even though you put new battery in you still have to have a viable altenator to run the vehicle. the battery is only used to start the vehicle and run the radio and lights and other accessories. while the vehicle is running the altenator is not only suppose to charge the battery but it is suppose to supply the amprage to energize and coolapse the coil to give the vehicle spark. a bad altenator while driving doesn't charge the battery it drains it . a quick check is to have the vehicle running and then remove the positive battery cable if it dies you know it's the altenator.... please rate this and good luck keep me posted
