The problem it seems your having is with the safety latch. It's designed so that if you don't close the hood properly the hood won't come flying open and smash you in the face at 65 mph.

When you 'pop' the hood lift it up a bit, as far as you can and look for a lever either behind the grill or just below the hood in the center. Some cars have the safety release way off center possibly over the driver side headlight.

I have a 2002 vw cabrio. The plastic lever on the lower left drivers side that pops the hood open is not working. When you pull it, it doesn't feel attached to anything & I can't pop the hood open. My car...

Easy fix after you get hood open. They are very substantial latches for security reasons. Does the handle pull the cable all the way out? Hopefully the cable has broken near the Handle and the outer houseing can be pealed away from the cable up to the fire wall. Then a vicegrip plier can be used to grip the pull cable. and unlatch the hood.

Open hood

the handle should be on the driver side of the vehicle in the driver footwell there should be a handle with a symbol on it near where your left foot would be if sitting in the seat. then when you do this your hood will pop the first lock. after that you will have to go to the hood while pushing up on the hood the "B" in the center of the wings should be sticking up higher that usual. pull on the "B" while pushing the hood up and after this point the hood should stay up after fully up by the struts under the hood.
hope this helps...

Hood release inoperable

Have someone push down and pull up on the hood while you pull the handle inside the car. Once you get it open, turn the bump-stops (one on each front corner of the area where the hood lands) counter clockwise to raise them. This should add some more pressure to help the hood "pop." Also, put some oil on the latch once it is open.

Hood safety latch

If its like mine, the release handle doesn't poke up, you have to press downward about 8-10 inches to the left of the ford emblem on the grill. Usually, the handle is INSIDE the grill, but mine is in the crack between the hood and frame when you pop the hood. Hope that helps.

My hood will not pop up when i pull release the cable. I can't get the hood open. Any ideas?

If it feels like the cable is attached when you pull the hood release try having someone push down on the front of the hood near the latch. Once the release is pulled out have the person relieve pressure from the hood once you let go of the release. This works for most stuck hood situations. If that doesn't work try having some one pull up on the hood while the release is pulled. This works when the spring has weakened. Once the hood is opened clean and lubricate the latch assembly to prevent further trouble.

Does any one know how to open the hood on a 1987 300e if the latch doesn't release

There is a release cable that is attatched to the red releas handle on the drivers under dash panel. You can grab that cable with needle nose pliers to release the hood to the first detent if the handle or cable is broken. There is a secondary release mechanism(called a hood tongue) which routes through the grille where the rectangular slot is once the hood is popped up with the release handle.you can grab the rest of the broken hood tongue with needle nose pliers and pull it out to completly release the hood from the saftey catch. If it is completely broken you can take a long screw driver and push the saftey catch( i beleive to the right) and the hood should be able to open all the way up. Both the hood tongue and the cable(securing portion at release handle) are common failures and break over the years.if it is at the release handle you are having a problem-get a #2 phillips screw driver and remove the release handle to gain access to the loose cable. I hope I have been helpful

02 intrepid hood safety latch wont release

If you pull on the release handle inside the car and it does not "pop" the hood open, make sure the hood is not already "popped". If it is, then try to push the hood down firmly until it does not pop up anymore. Then, try the interior pull handle again. If the hood is completely closed and the pull handle does not pop it open, try to remove the handle slightly from the dash. This involves removing 2 phillips head screws (one from either side of the handle). When these are out, you should be able to pull the handle and its small trim/holder piece. See if this is broken and try to pull back on the actual release cable ("silver" braided wire) with a pair of wires.

If nothing above pertains to the issue, then let me go to a different one. If the pull handle works fine and "pops" the hood like normal, but you are unable to unlatch the hood, then I need more information as to the conditions of the problem. Has it released properly in the past?

Also, make sure that you are pulling the correct lever when trying to unlatch the hood. Standing in front of the car facing it, the lever will be just to the left of the very center of the hood. It should have a yellow end. Pull up on that and everything should release.

If these ideas do not help you out, then I will need more information. Let me know and I'll be glad to help you through.

Can not open hood

Will start simple:
If the handle is broken inside car, find cable end pull with pliers, the handle is replaceable by itself from dealer or junkyard.

If you are pulling handle and hood will not pop up, have a helper pull up on front of hood and lightly bump down on hood near the latch with their hand or fist(careful not to dent) while you pull on handle and it should popup, now lube it before you close it, the hood may then need to be opened and closed several times to work lube into latch(this sticking is common when latch system is not lubricated regularly).

If the before mentioned does not work...the cable could be detached at latch which is usually caused by: lack of lubrication and/or trying to open hood in winter after going through carwash.
Now things get trickier and you're best finding a shop that can raise the car up so that they can jimmy it from below.

Bypassing hood cable override system to get under my hood

Also helps to clean and oil the latching mechanism. On my Blazer (01) you'd pull the handle by the brake all the way back, hear a slight click up under the hood and nothing happened. Pound on the hood above the latch a few times and it'd pop open. I cleaned and oiled it... works fine now
