If you have no experience with this please take it to some one whom does, trying to explain this to some one with little knowledge of is asking for trouble and safety issues. All cars have similar brake pads so with that said you really need a person to show you in person how it is done.

1997n saturn sl1 front brakes didnt need replaced but back brakes were replaced. horrendous scrubbing noise still there- no leaks from brake fluid, are there issues with master cylinder??

Take it to another repair shop and tell them to look at the front end and figure out what is wrong. There are no mechanical parts in the master cylinder which would make a scrubbing noise. If the front pads are good, you could still have a caliper or bearing problem.

Service engine soon light comes on intermitngly

Is it due for maintenance? Oil change, brakes, etc.? Some cars keep track of mileage and advise when it's time for service.

Take it to a mechanic or Saturn dealer to ID the problem.

DO NOT continue to drive the car as it may cause permanent damage or leave you stranded.

check your spark plug wells for oil build up. A BIG problem with the early saturn's are related to the rubber valve cover gaskets the go around the spark plug wells. I have changed dozens that just ware out.
