Head gasket replacement

How do you get the gasket changed without special tools? I heard that you have to have a special tool to hold the camshaft in place to remove it so it won't break. What is the step by step process to do the job?

I'm assuming you have the 5 cylinder engine. Changing the gasket is a pig of a job, especially it it's a T5. AFAIK you don't need a special tool to hold the camshafts in place (at least, I had no trouble) although it makes it easier when you replace them. I can't detail the process here as it's too involved but I will mention one point: On the T5, there is a support bracket between the exhaust manifold and the block which is *not mentioned* either in the official workshop manual or Haynes! I don't know if it's present on non-turbo models. If you have a T5 I would seriously consider getting a spare engine from a breaker rather than changing the gasket - it really is that bad :{{{

Recently repalced radiator in '97 850 turbo,
really love this car as per preformance. A
weak house clap and 40 miles later the
engine is fried. Found all kinds of easly
correctable problem areas, particularly the
busted intercoorer elbo. Never ran better
for about a day, even caught the probelm
early and attempted to correct it with a
putty knife used as a screw driver. And
now I drive a cherry '93 last of the 240
series 160 miles for $1200, quite an
adjustment. At least now I know exactly
what to do with my 850, it's not worth
fix'en but idea for a used engine.

The special tool 99-02 intrigue/aurora camshaft holders is unavailable to me. How do I replace head gaskets and reinstall timing chains (3 of them) correctly without the special tool to hold camshafts


They're available. Get them at the dealer. High dollar tools. Better think, Is the car worth the trouble. An 02 is 13 years old. If you do the head job and it has high miles, it could blow out really worn rings on the pistons. A whole set of other problems that will cost you way to much money.

How do I align the camshaft to the crank without placing cam locking tools on it before replacing


I have often used vice grip pliers on non machined surface of cams wrapped in a rag to carefully turn cams to correct position. This should only involve slight adjustment if everything was lined up when you took the old belt off. IF NOT, or old belt had broken, you need to know if your engine is an "interference" or "non-interference" engine before you go further.

You must use a special tool which bolts onto the cylinder head. It is designed to hold the camshafts in the proper position. It goes over the flats on the camshafts to hold the camshafts in the correct position. This tool can be rented. Look on EBay or check with your local Snap On Tools, Mac Tools, or Matco Tools dealers to rent one. See the link below for photos of properly aligned timing marks for your engine.

Hi, I have pasted instructions below from autozone.com. The instructions call for the use of special tools. You can improvise with alternate tools, but please make sure your timing is right before closing the cover. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

1.9L Diesel Engine
Some special tools are required to perform this procedure properly. A flat bar, VW tool 2065A is used to secure the camshaft in position. A pin, VW tool 2064 is used to fix the pump position while the timing belt is removed. The camshaft and pump work against spring pressure and will move out of position when the timing belt is removed. It is not difficult to find substitutes but do not remove the timing belt without these tools.

WARNING Do not turn the engine or camshaft with the timing belt removed. The pistons will contact the valves and cause internal engine damage.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the accessory drive belts, crankshaft pulley and the timing belt cover(s). Remove the camshaft cover and rubber plug at the back end of the camshaft.
  2. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) of No. 1 piston. The mark on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with the mark on the inner timing belt cover or the edge of the cylinder head.
  3. With the engine at TDC, insert the bar into the slot at the back of the camshaft. The bar rests on the cylinder head to will hold the camshaft in position.
  4. Insert the pin into the injection pump drive sprocket to hold the pump in position.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner counterclockwise to relieve the tension on the timing belt. Slide the timing belt from the sprockets.

To install:
  1. Install the new timing belt and adjust the tension so the belt can be twisted 45 degrees at the halfway point between the camshaft and pump sprockets. Tighten the tensioner nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  2. Remove the holding tools.
  3. Turn the engine 2 full revolutions to return to TDC for the No. 1 cylinder. Recheck belt tension and timing mark alignment, readjust as required.
  4. Install the belt cover and accessory drive belts.
    NOTE If the belt is too tight, there will be a growling noise that rises and falls with engine speed.

Setting of timing chains


Get Ford timing tool kit, part = otc-6488 (For about $119 USD on eBay)

4 timing chains (3 front including the optional balance shaft chain + 1 back)

2 cam guides (1 front + 1 back)

2 oil tensioners (1 front + 1 back)

1 jackshaft tensioner (1 front)

1 jackshaft guide/cassette (1 front)

1 balance shaft tensioner (1 front) (will probably be ok, so dont replace it)

1 balance shaft guide (1 front) (will probably be ok, so dont replace it)

new sprockets + bolts + gaskets etc.

new spark plugs + throttle body cleaner + lithium grease spray + oil change

head gaskets


some of these parts (the front stuff) can be obtained as a primary timing chain rattle noise kit Part# = 2u3e-6d256-** ab for 4*4 & bb for 2*4.

Its worth mentioning that this procedure is not enjoyable at all and should be undertaken with at least 8 full days to completion (I recon you could do it in half the time the second time).

It is basically on entire engine re-build with both heads off and the engine out of the vehicle.

It is not possible to do the rear chain or sprocket with the engine in the car as the flywheel needs to come off + at least 1 head, but it is possible to do the front primary chain and or front cam chain with the engine in the car.

You will be a ford exploder and timing expert after you do this - the main reason should be the love of your American built vehicle. Its a solid car - except for the plastic guides!

Disclaimer Note: This is how i successfully did the job, but i am not a ford mechanic and don't hold me responsible if this does not work for you.
Timing Overview

A Small Sprocket on the crank turns a larger (2 to 1 ratio) jackshaft sprocket that is in turn connected front & back to the 2 camshafts.

Thus a 360o turn of the crank will turn both the camshafts 180o.

Firing order is 1-4 2-5 3-6, Right side numbers 1,2,3. Left Side = 4,5,6.

At TDC pistons 1 & 5 are fully raised, thus 1 is about to spark & 5 is evacuated.

The engine will turn freely (no piston to valve contact) with the cams 180o out, it will even run (roughly) with 1 out 180o, any other settings may cause major damage to the valves.

The 2 cam shafts come with timing markings, "yes" real timing marks that anyone can use (even without special tools) to ensure correct timing.

The way to time it is to ensure both the off centre cam shaft slits are level/flat with the head.

With the engine at TDC both the cams need to have the off centre slot in the same position either up and level or down and level.

It is super critical that both the camshafts are 100% in sink with each other, i.e. not a few degrees off, the engine computer can compensate for crank timing but not engineering failure.

Be warned the camshafts can turn easily fast & hard by themselves as a few springs are compressed at TDC, I got my finger jammed and its still healing + if the engine is not at TDC you may damage a valve.

Now heres the hard thing that you will need special tools for - if you need to change the timing, you will need to be able to undo the cam sprocket bolt on both cams & these are done up real tight.

There is a tool that you attach that has 2 pencil thick shafts that fit into the sprocket and prevent it from turning - then you need to put about 90Nm of force on the bolt (remember the rear one if LHT)

For the $money$, its well worth getting yourself the tool kit - it will save you hours in the long run. Search eBay for otc-6488 should be US $119 - then sell them again for say $100.

There is also a tool version of the oil tensioner in the kit that screws right in and puts the correct amount of force on the chain + guide, to enable you to do up the cam bolt with the chain and sprocket in the right spot on the cam.

The 2.0L engine is an interference motor. Extending the replacement interval could lead to the belt breaking and severe and costly engine damage. Care must be taken if rotating the crankshaft or camshafts with the belt off, if resistance is felt, do not force them to turn.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers as outlined in this Section.
  3. Remove the valve cover.
  4. Place Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH or equivalent, into the slots of both camshafts at the rear of the cylinder head to lock the camshafts into position. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  5. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and move the tensioner pulley to relieve the tension on the timing belt.
  6. Temporarily tighten the tensioner in this position. NOTE: If the timing belt is to be reused, mark the belt for the direction of rotation before removing to prevent premature wear or failure.
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8. If required, remove the sprockets as follows:
    1. Hold the camshaft with an appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool.
    2. Loosen and remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.
    3. Remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
    4. Repeat the procedure for the 2nd camshaft sprocket.
    5. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
  9. Slide the crankshaft sprocket onto the crankshaft aligning the key-way.
  10. Align the camshafts using the Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH. NOTE: If the special tool is unavailable, a suitable length and width straight edge can be used to align the camshafts.
  11. Reinstall the sprockets onto the camshafts and loosely install the camshaft retaining bolts.
  12. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  13. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is at TDC. Realign the marks if they have moved.
  14. Verify that the camshafts are aligned. NOTE: It is recommended to purchase a tensioner spring and retaining bolt through the dealer parts to apply the proper tension for used or new belt installations. The spring is bolted to the tensioner assembly and becomes a part of the engine. Ignore this notice if the tensioner spring is already installed.
  15. Reinstall the retaining bolt (W700001-S309) into the hole provided in the cylinder block and place the tensioner spring (6L277) between the bolt and the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley.
  16. Tighten the retainer bolt to 71–97 inch lbs. (8–11 Nm) .
  17. Remove the crankshaft pulley and install the timing belt onto the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the camshaft sprockets working in a counterclockwise direction.
  18. Tighten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolts to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
  19. Be sure that the span of the camshaft timing belt between the crankshaft sprocket and the exhaust camshaft sprocket is not loose.
  20. Be sure that the camshaft timing belt is securely aligned on all sprockets.
  21. Reinstall the lower timing belt cover and tighten the retaining bolts to 53–71 inch lbs. (6–8 Nm) .
  22. Apply silicone sealer to the key-way of the crankshaft pulley and install. Tighten the retaining bolt to 81–89 ft. lbs. (110–120 Nm) .
  23. Inspect the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to verify that the engine is still at TDC.
  24. Loosen the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt and allow the tensioner spring attached to the pulley to draw the tensioner pulley against the camshaft timing belt.
  25. Remove the camshaft alignment timing tool from the camshafts at the rear of the engine.
  26. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in a clockwise direction.
  27. Tighten the camshaft timing belt tensioner pulley retaining bolt to 26–30 ft. lbs. (35–40 Nm) .
  28. Recheck that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 piston, and that both camshafts are in alignment using the camshaft alignment timing tool. NOTE: A slight adjustment of the camshafts to allow the insertion of the camshaft alignment timing tool is permissible as long as the crankshaft stays at the TDC location.
  29. An appropriate camshaft sprocket holding tool can be used to move the camshaft sprocket (s) if a slight adjustment is required.
  30. If a camshaft is not properly aligned, perform the following procedure:
    1. Loosen the retaining bolt securing the sprocket to the camshaft while holding the camshaft sprocket from turning with the sprocket holding tool.
    2. Turn the camshaft until the camshaft alignment timing tool can be installed.
    3. Verify that the crankshaft timing mark is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
    4. While holding the camshaft sprocket with the camshaft sprocket holding tool, tighten the retaining bolt to 47–53 ft. lbs. (64–72 Nm) .
    5. Remove the tool and rotate the crankshaft two revolutions (clockwise) .
    6. Verify that the camshafts are aligned and that the crankshaft is at TDC for the No. 1 cylinder.
  31. Install the valve cover.
  32. Install the timing belt covers.

the tool you need is akit check on e-bay gm special tool costs about 1800.00 from kent more do not use heli coil they will not hold follow instructions exactly when using time serts

Got audi a4 1996 diesel need to change cambelt but


A diesel uses a different procedure. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulley parallel to the top of the cylinder head. The timing mark to set TDC for piston #1 is located on top of bell housing. The pointer must be aligned on the diamond cut on the flywheel. A VW/Audi setting bar tool #2065A is needed to lock the camshaft in position. Lock the injection pumpin position using the special lock pin (VW/Audi special tool no. 2064). Caution: If the drive belt is broken or has jumped time, do not attempt to lock the sprocket at this time!!! You will also need VW/Audi special tool no. VW210 to measure belt tension between camshaft sproket and injection pump sprocket. So good luck.

Headgasket is out of this 1997 saturn sc2 1.9 liter


I have changed a head gasket on a saturn 1.9 L engine, no special tools are required. Take your time and be patient. do not over tighten the headbolts and do not forget to torque them to the correct specs. after about a week of driving check everything you tightened to uinsure they remained tight. all should be well when the project is complete. Oh one more thing. a mechanic dropped a socket into a friends engine and blew the motor. be very careful that all of your tools are acounted for before starting the engine
