Question about 1997 Nissan Sentra

1 Answer

1997 nissan sentra serpentine belt

We think the serpentine belt went this morning the brake light and battery light came on and there was a burning smell, but the power steering did not go out. Was only two blocks from home, so got it home without over-heating. Is this hard to replace and does it sound like the serpentine belt? My husband says he can see it all mangled in there

My battery and brake light on my '97 Sentra are coming on at the same time accompanied by a grinding sound and burning smell. Now the car is barely getting a charge. Can this be a bad alternator?

The serpentine belt has nothing to do with the brakes. It does have something to do with the alternator which charges the battery. the burning smell is probably the result of wasted grooves on the underside of the belt. it is the belt you see just inside the car engine compartment that turns the AC unit compressor pully , the alternator, etc.it is connected to the crankshaft pully.. If you have a front wheel drive it is located on the side of the engine compartment.

Battery and brake lights on

John, According to Nissan forums weak failing alternator is the common problem for bat and brk light on. If you are sure battery and alternator are good, I say check and clean battery connections and all grounds(loosen and re tighten all ground connections to give good contact), check belt for being loose.

I have a 1997 Nissan Sentra. Everytime I hit the breaks the battery light and brake light come on.

Hi! You may just have a grounded wire and I suggest that you have it checked thouroughly by an auto electrician to correct this. The battery light is an indication of a weak battery or faulty alternator but if it starts fine then its certainly just a grounded wiring somewhere. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

97 nissan sentra with brake and battery light staying lit after changing battery. when it goes into passing gear light goes off then comes back on

These lights will come on if your alternator isn't charging fully. With a multi meter test your voltage at the battery with the engine running. The voltage should be above 14 volts. If it is below 14 you will need to replace the alternator.

Brake and Battery dashboard lights coming on at same time

Check looseness or corrosion on the leads and wiring at the battery terminals. Check for looseness or corrosion on the alternator connectors. With vehicle started and reved to 2000RPM, use a voltmeter to measure voltage and that measurement should be between 13.5-14.8. If you're unable to achieve this voltage have your alternator checked at autozone or advance auto, its free. Hopefully this helps

1995 Nissan Sentra, The engine light and brake

You could have faulty altenator or short causing the battery to drain. The engine light usually comes on when anything electrical or sensor wise is faulty. Brake light will come on if, low brake fluid, e-brake handle is up.
