Ok have you checked that the tyre pressure is the same on all four wheels or it could be that the rear axel is not being lubricated properly check the bushing.

It should be possible to gain a rough idea of the problem from the tyre wear.

Choppy scalloped type wear suggests defective shocks or excessive wheel imbalance.

Wear of both shoulders or edges of a tyre or the centre of the tread indicates incorrect tyre pressures.

If both tyres are displaying a similar wear pattern on the same inside or outside shoulder indicates incorrect toe setting.

If one tyre has a shoulder that is wearing it indicates an incorrect camber angle.

If both tyres are wearing differently the problem is likely to be a combination.

The rear alignment of some cars is adjustable and slight misalignment can be corrected but often rectification comes down to replacing parts or even using a body jack to move mounting points.

I suggest you book your car in for a 4-wheel alignment check.

can be anything have a 4 wheel alignment done ---problem for excessive tire wear --out of balance --improper tire for vehicle -chamber to much/to little- air under / over inflated -abuse -bad shock/strut-bad hub/axle --suspension alignment / worn /damaged

Back tire inner wear problem

Might have a bent axle or
might have shifted off the rear spring.
This happens when rear struts are replaced.

I am not an Mercedes expert, but if your rear axle is not solid from one side to the other, you have one of a number of hinged floating rear axles. These may simply require an alignment, just as the front end requires.

With excess wear on the inside track of the tires, the inside of the tire is pitched down lower than the outside edge. Most rear tires are set to run level or slightly pitched to improve handling.

If your rear assembly is not adjustable, the connecting bushings are worn on the linked suspension or the rear axle bearings have excess clearance.

Go somewhere to have a 4 wheel alignment, not to be confused with 4 wheel drive.

I am looking at buying one tomorrow its a 2005 x5 sport what should i look out for?

Watch out for a vehicle thats had a 2 inch or greater upgrade in tyres. These things chew up the inner sides of the rear tyres pretty savagely, the standard tyres (eg a 235/65/17 for a base model) relies on having sidewall flex and low(ish) tyre pressures to spread the weight and wear on the rears. Lower profile and or higher pressure will chew out rear tyres.
Also look out for the drivers door handle, its called the 'carrier' its weak and wears out, a genuine BMW carrier fitted in a BMW workshop can cost you over $600 all up. You can get OEM parts for $100 on Ebay, From the same factory and packed in same box and then make whoever is fitting it quote you on hours and dollars before they start. You drive away under $250 AuD
Keep up the oil changes, air and fuel filters and you will have a vehicle to be proud of, Fantastic motoring, Enjoy.

out side edge wear usually means positive camber, dont know if rear camber is adjustable on your car. alignment specs arnt going to help you unless you have an aligment rack

What is lockup

Most vehicles are two wheel drive (2WD) and some are four wheel drive (4WD). All have differential gearing this means that each wheel can turn at it's own speed and this is essential when cornering as the inner wheels traverse a shorter path than the outer wheels. Without it the outside tyres would all tend to skid to some extent as they try to rotate on a surface which is moving faster or slower than the tyre's rotation speed. This is known as lock up and it causes excessive tyre wear, fuel consumption, steerring and suspension component wear and an unpleasant snatchy ride.

On off-road surfaces, lock up (differential lock) is a good thing as any tyre which loses traction does not cause the others to do so. As the surface is slippery or unstable the other tyres can easily skid against the surface without excessive wear whilst cornering.

Unless there is noise or play when cornering sharply at low speeds (parking), the CV joint / boot is still ok. The joint does need grease in there and the rubber boot fitted properly very soon.

As the suspension is set, the axle does little more than provide drive. It doesn't affect toe-in or camber angle.

Camber angle (vertical tilt inwards) is a product of the suspension design, and often cannot be altered.

Weak front springs can also throw this angle out, as the vehicle sits too low.

Toe-in (forward point angle) can and must be set accurately, or you will skid about in wet weather depending which tyre grips more.

What is most important to you, is the tyre design, tread width and outer radius. Also the tyre pressures MUST be mid limit when cold on the front - otherwise excess wear will result.

Having tyres with a large contact area that are too rigid on the front will increase wear to the insides.

Also, it is good practice to rotate the tyres to even-out wear. Usually front tyres move to rear axle, and rears swap sides to front axle. If wear is uneven, pop them off and turn around before refitting. Some tyres you cannot do this with.

If you choose a tyre with a harder tread compound, or ones with "C" at the end of the code, these will again last a lot longer.
