WATER pump is out. Why do all of the auto repair folks charge $700-800 to repair it. I know that they have to replace the timing belt and maybe the tensioner and a few rollers,,but what the heck compared to a $400 bill in the past?

A requirement to fixing the vehicle includes, estimated costs of parts and technical installation fees. The extent to the damage requiring several parts that costs more would likely cost more in fees to install considering technicallity involved with vehicle.

The concern is about wanting to pay the same fee for the same defect on the same vehicle throughtout the vehicles duration. The technicallity of a vehicle get more complicated over duration of time.
1. The vehicle losses value through out the duration of existence. A requirement of wanting to keep it on the road only keeps requiring more resoures once the duration exeeds durability specification. A collaboration of yourself and technical expert could restore features whenver developements occur. However at a cost like mentioned. Your realisation of the issue has possible solutions.
2. Fixing the fault on one hand, or considering alternatives;

Its a big job. do not put it off. Replace th ebelt and tensioner, do not skimp, buy the best parts from the dealer. If that timing belt breaks, the valves will be bent, and it will never run again, unless you have $2000 to put into it. I'm not trying to scare you, just the facts.

Trying to find the water pump

On cars that have a timing chain, the water pump is usually mounted on the front of the engine block and is driven by the drive belt. On most cars that have timing belts, the water pump is mounted on the front of the engine as well, but driven by the timing belt and is concealed under the timing belt cover. It is always recommended that the water pump be replaced whenever the timing belt is done because due to variations in timing belt tension, if you reuse the old water pump on a new timing belt, the average life span of the water pump can be measured in weeks. Some folks think that the repair shop is just trying to milk more money out of them, but this is one case where they are right. If you go cheap (and really, the difference in parts is usually after 40-50 USD with about the same amount in additional labor), you will wind up spending the full labor cost of a timing belt job again in a few weeks to replace the pump.

I went to get an oil change for my car which is a saturn view and they told me that after 100 000 you should get the timing belt and the water pump change. Is it true and if it is how much does it cost?

Well it would not be a bad idea but not completely necessary unless it is running awkward. If the timing belt wares it can slip out or rip and ruin the engine.100,000 is a fair amount of wear on one belt. The water pump is under the is behind the water pup housing. Due the difficulty, time and money involved with replacing one or the other it is usually best to do both at once as they are both right there. Your technician is telling the truth. Now your Saturn is not going to fall to pieces if you don't do this tomorrow but at 100,000 miles both are recommended. As for the cost, shops differ but it is a bit expensive. Not nearly as expensive as a new engine though. This is just a random guess $400 give or take. Let me know if this helps.

Water pump and beyond

well at 86,000 miles ive never replaced a tensioner or idler pully on a subaru maybe at 120,000 or more, it is more time to replace the crank seal and the cam seals and then the price of the pullys is about that 450.00 but dont think pullys were needed at this time, the timing belt is a no brainer got to replace, you dont know if coolant got to belt it could weaken. but the waterpump ,belt and seals and t-stant is all that should of been done, well now your good with pullys for100,000miles. good luck.

How do I replace a water pump on a 1995 honda civic ? What tools do I need and how difficult is it ?

this is a very hard procudure since you would need to disasemble the entire front of the engine, timing belt and all to remove the water pump. and if the belt is not put back together properly you can actually cause terminal engine failure

How do you replace the timing belt?

Not going to like my answer here, but without any expertise in auto mechanics, I would caution you to let someone else do it. In most cases, (don't know this specific car), involves removal of water pump, pretty extensive work. And often should do other work at same time.

(as an example, in 1990s Honda Accords, it was advised to change the water pump when replacing the timing belt. All of the labor was already there, just a "relatively" small charge for the water pump itself.)

Instructions to change a timing belt would be to difficult to post here. If you have a strong desire to do it yourself, get a manual like Chiltons or Hayes with instructions and pictures.

Timing belt tensionor

If your replacing the timing belt you should also be replacing the water pump. Just easier to replace both at the same time. The timing belt tensioner is part of the water pump case. Go to the auto parts store and ask to see a water pump for your engine. New ones come with the tensioner installed. Rebuilt pumps usually have to have one installed. Check out ebay item 220332480595. Nice photo of what you need to know. Good luck.

My 98 eclipse is making a screeching noise in the engine

1.Most likely alternator belt is not tight enough or need new one.2. A/C-Power steering belt is loose or need new one. 3. Bearing in A/C-Power Steering Tensioner is going bad. 4. Not the water pump unless you are loosing water all the time. Timing belt runs the water pump & you need to tear down the engine. If so ,you would need to replace the timingbelt, tensioners, and maybe the hydraulic tensioner. NOT FOR $300, more like 5-600. Get yourself a Haynes Manual for 95-99 Eclipse at AUTOZONE,Advanced Auto, or Pep Boys and read up on this.

Well, besides "him-hawing" around. I'll be good after I ask you a question.

you are not going to find it without taking some part off first, because its behind the timing belt cover. which will be very costly when they replace it, it would be a very good idea to let a auto repair shop test it first. and also ask them to replace the timing belt too while their all it will cost is the belt price.
