Key removal problem

With the car turned off and in park, I cannot remove the key from the ignition switch. The key can be removed by pressing the button on the steering column.

I have the same problem. Can turn it off but the can not turn the key the last bit that allows it to come out. Took it in and paid $65 for diagnostic. They said a solinoid is bad- electronic issue not mechanical. Also will at times locks it in park and cant shift out.

didn't know about a button to take the key out-- will look for it. there is an override on the shift to take it out of park.

I had the same problem with my wife's kia. when you put the car in park the shifter hits a limit switch in the center console. It's positioned at the bottom of the shifter rod. And if it's bent or broke it will not unlock the key. You may want to check that out. It's not hard to check the hardest part is to get the cover off the center console. It's kinda hard to explain put not to bad.

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

My brother told me to go onto the Internet to find out how to remove the ignition key on his 1997 Mercury Sable. He didn't say ignition switch just ignition key. Is that the same and how does he go about...

The key is what goes into the switch. So the key is stuck in the switch? try pushing in the key while turning the switch back to get it fully to the off position so you can remove the key.
Or there might be a button lock near the switch you might have to press to remove the key.
Worst case the key and switch are broken and jammed. If that is what happened, or your brother is acutally talking about the switch, to remove and install a new switch youll have to take it to a shop

Locked ignition. Can't get car out of park or turn ignition switch. Ignition is locked up.

you will most likely have to replace key cylinder. remove cowl around steering column, upper & lower, remove plastic cyl around key, you will need a paper clip to remove key cyl. small hole near back of key cyl, install paper clip end pushing down turn key cyl, to run position, jiggle key cyl to remove. auto parts store should have replacement. good luck

Cannot remove key from ignition when car is in

Try pressing and releasing the gearshift disengagement button to the upper right of the gearshift knob. This has an electrical switch which controls a solenoid in the ignition keyswitch.
