Hello , this engine fan problem could be for many reasons , what you should check on is the thermostat , and the fan fuse is ok , and to be sure that the fan motor works and that by connecting it directly to the battery , and just a small advice don't do this yourself , and thank you for using fixya

I have a 1997 Intrepid that keeps overheating. I took it to a shop, and they say that the radiator fans have shorted out fuses. I was just wondering if this was a problem that I could fix on my own,...

Ur problem is easy to solve and must be done quickly to avoid damage to the head or other engine components.
1. Ur two fans must be working and,
2. the thermostat which triggers the fans must be in working order as wel.
3. The two fans have fuses in the fuse comp box, they must not be broken, if so, replace them.
4. Make sure there is optimum coolant in the radiator and that it is clean. Rusty wall and dirt reduces the efficiency of the radiator: u can use radiator flush to get rid of the dirt.
This should answer the heating problem, if it doesnt u may need to have the head

95 toyota corolla 1.8 engine, cooling fan works but only when you disconnect the fan switch, or by pass the fan relay, it's not overheating, but it's causing the coolant to overflow the resivor. Replaced...

Check the engine main relay, the radiator fan relay no. 1, 30A CDS and FAN fuses, and the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor for proper function. For the ECT, there should be continuity when the engine is cold (200F).

My car is running hot within 1 mile of me driving fan kicks on when it wants to....i need to know how to fix it myself

replace coolant temp, sensor and check for a bad fan relay. check relay first ! to test the fans, run a wire from positive on battery to positive on fan connection. then run a wire from negative battery post to neg, connection on fan. if the motors are ok. the fans will turn on. and make sure you have 12 volts going to fan motors. check relay first!! the fans on a typical engine only work when idling or going slow to prevent it from heating up. have a good day!! make sure there is no coolant leaks anywhere!! this will cause it to overheat also. if need be replace coolant pressure cap on overflow, might not be holding pressure.

The seized radiator fan has probably caused the current overload that blew the fuse and subsequently damaged the fan supply relay.
Repair or replace the seized fan if possible.
If not able to replace/repair immediatley, temporarily leave the fan disconnected, but be aware it may cause engine to overheat when vehicle in operation and will definitly need to be fixed before the vehicle is fully serviceable.

Replace the fuse and fan supply relay if faulty and repair/replace any burnt wiring.
I would not recommend re-arranging the wiring or fuses in any way - as that may cause further damage - especially if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

I have a nissan maxima 2000 and the air conditioner isn't working. The fan isn't rotating, and it overheat with a burning rubber smell if it is left on. I also notice the car makes a pinging sound...

Check the radiator fluid level.
Sounds like the water pump or alternator or power steering pump has seazed causing the fan belt not to drive the rest of the necessaryattaychments also causing engine to overheat.

Check to see if there is water in the oil...If there is water in the oil then it could have a head gasket problem..Did you ever replace the thermostat? If it is stuck then it would also cause overheating...Excessive exhaust backpressure because of a clogged catalytic converter could also cause overheating..Also check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling...Another thing it could be is a faulty Water pump -- Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts... Also check the Fan -- With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch, though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fan's cooling effectiveness by as much as 50% (depending on the fan's distance from the radiator) which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

Heater temperature does not stay hot

1st thing to check is the coolant level. I've seen cars w/ no heat, or very little quite a few times caused by low level in cooling system--not low enough to overheat the engine, but enough that circulation of coolant to heater core is affected (no or little hot coolant circulation to heater core=no or little heat),
Is the engine temp gauge in the normal range? If it's in the low range, engine not reaching operating temp. it could be caused by a thermostat stuck in the open position (or no thermostat, sometimes people remove them when their car overheats, and this should not be done).
Here's how the system works: the heater 'box' contains a heater core (a mini radiator) w/ a fan and hoses connecting the heater core to the engine cooling system. Hot engine coolant is circulated thru the heater core. When u activate the heat switch on the dash, a flap door opens to expose the heater box to the passenger compartment. The fan switch on the dash activates the fan, which blows air thru the core, which heats the air.
So, if it's not the coolant level at the radiator, the fan is obviously working, the engine is reaching operating temperature, I would say it must be the flap door that opens, isn't opening fully, or isn't staying open. It could be the dash switch is defective (not supplying current to open flap door) or less likely the flap door is binding somehow. Hope it's as simple as correcting coolant level, if not, the dash switch control should be checked

My 2005 mazda mpv's fan does not shut off after the ignition is turned off. I must turn the ignition back to the starting position and then off again or the fan will continue to run for several minutes...

I have a 2003 MPV with the same problem. There was a recall in 2004 to replace the fan controller module, which apparently would fail regularly. I had mine replaced under the recall although there were no symptoms at the time. Now it appear that the replacement has failed, but I've already used the recall and you can only do it once. Even though your warranty is up the recall still applies if your car is of the model that qualifies. Call your dealer, and he can tell you if you are eligible. It is almost certainly the problem. I don't care how you drive or what the temperature is, your fan shouldn't run immediately after starting or run for more than a couple of minutes after you shut it off.

Rad fan fuse blows

there is perhaps a short in the wire harness which explains why the fuse always blows. i would also check to make sure your fan relay is good. that is located in the fuse box under the hood.
