The car will not turn over, but the flashers flash on their own, the bells ring on their own and I have to pull a battery cable to get the lights and bells to stop.

Get this manual online at www.reliable-store.com and get complete guide on whether to repair or not, service it, and how to repair etc, along with wiring diagrams, electrical diagrams, torque specs, error codes, everything.
This is weird! It seems to me that the left turn signal is getting 12v from somewhere at all times.I don't think the flasher is the problem(most GM systems use a single flasher for left and right)You probably have a crossed wire somewhere(or an add on accessory was connected to the left signal wire, allowing 12 volts to bleed through to the circuit)
If it does this on both sides it is probally a feature built in or a flasher relay. Put on your 4-way flashers and see if they go off. Read the owners manual to see if its built in, mine will start a bell ringing if I leave it on.
Yes, the flasher does interrupt the brake signal. you do know that this is a push on, push off switch. Some try to pull this switch to turn off flashers, but, it has to be pushed again to turn off.
