Question about 1999 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

1999 gmc 1500 sierra truck v8

Air condition blows cold air , then blows hot air. This happens at intervals of 5 to 10 minutes. Pressure and freon charge are ok. What could be the culprit of this problem?

The clutch in compressor is controlled by a pressure switch. Start there.

The liquid receiver. That is where the large hose comes from.

  • ccdhair Jun 25, 2008

You might try by-passing the switch and applying power directlly to clutch but...Do not allow the pressure to build up too much or you will have a real problem. Watch your guages closely.

Inside that large hose (at liquid receiver) is a metering device. It may have trash in it.

I do not know. Never ran into that. Are you really sure that it has a full charge? It is possible that there may be air in your system. I have found that sometimes the water valve for heater will not shut off completely but this would make A/C run all the time.

When the compressor kicks on, is the air from the vents blowing cold? If the air isn't blowing cold, then your problem could be that you may have water in the system. I had a '93 Chevy Z71 that wouldn't blow cold and thats what my problem was. System needs to be evacuated and refilled. Good luck bro.

Hello: When the condition occurs pull over, do no turn engine off, open hood on the passenger side there is a line that comes out of the accumulator, if it is white(frosted up) the you have a low pressure switch that is not working properly. This switch cuts the compressor off to keep the system from freezing up. If you have this condition you can fix it yourself. Get a new switch and o ring, put a small amount of oil on the o ring. Unscrew the old switch, screw the new one in (electrical connector disconnected before removing old switch) connect the connector. You will not loose the freon as there is a schrader valve that will keep the freon in the system.

When you change from heat to air , it still blowes hot air like it is not switching to air conditing, the compressure is running and lines get cold, but no cold air. thanks

If the orifice filter is clogged, this will happen, a better check can

be done with an ac manifold gauge set, the low side reads the

evaporator pressure and the high side reads the discharge

pressure. I had the same problem while checking the ac on a

2000 gmc 1500 z71 4x4. other things that could cause this are

to much oil in the ac compressor or not enough freon in the

system. an overcharged system , the best way to check it is with

a gauge that way you can tell if you have the right amount of freon

and oil in the system. plus the gauge set will let you know the

extent of your problem. good luck!

if it is low on freon the compressor will have 0 volts becuase the low pressure switch on the evaporator isn't triggering...if you have freon then replace the low pressure switch...take a small piece of wire and disconnect the low pressure switch and jump the two sides of the plug together...compressor should come on

the low pressure port is the charging port, this port is either in the low pressure line or the accumulator that the low pressure lines to to (can shaped object), the low pressure line is the larger of the two lines from the compressor.

It sounds like you either have an condensor fan problem or low freon. The condensor fan is near the radiator. In some cases the radiator fan doubles as the condensor fan. So look there too.
