Question about 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser

1 Answer

Ignition failure Not always, but becoming more regular, I will turn my ignition switch when starting and all I get is a click. Sometimes jiggling the key inside the switch will start it right away, other times it will take 2,3,or 4 times moving the key around inside the switch and starting over. When it starts, it starts like a champ. The battery is new. I'm thinking it's the ignition switch, but doing some research I'm seeing the igniter may also be suspect. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

You have the same symptoms as my 94 TLC. I suspected the starter/solenoid, took it to the shop and sure enough $300 dollars laters starter replaced problem fixed.

When the key is turned to the start position nothing happens, no click or any sound. If you turn key off and then try again it will start on third or fourth time. Has new battery so that's not the problem. Starter solenoid doesn't seem to be the problem since there is no noise when it doesn't work. Maybe faulty ignition switch or is there a solenoid/relay that is activated when you turn the key that makes electrical contact with the starter soleniod. If there is then maybe that's the problem. Anybody have any suggestions.
    Thanks

there is no connection between the ignition switch and the shift lever. One turns the power on to run and start and the shift lever prevents start until neutral or park is set . Therefore it is possible that the fault is not in the switch but in the adjustment of the neutral switch on the transmission.

if an ignition switch fails, sometimes you can jiggle the key and it will start right up. its very hard to tell. but if you can start it by bypassing the ignition switch, then its the switch itself. go to this site for more detailed info--- aa1car.com/library/1999/cm119948.htm---this page should help. click on top link.

You need to have the ignition switch replaced. You can do it yourself, but you would need a manual to tell you how to take the steering column apart.

02 vw euro, 60k miles, intermitent no power to ignition switch. This symptom has only occured 6 or 8 times. Turn key...lights come on, no noise, no click, no crank, nothing....first occured. 2 months...

Sounds like it may be related to the 'neutral safety switch'. When you turn the key to start the engine, current goes from the ignition switch through the neutral safety switch to the starter relay, then on to the starter. Some cars have a shift linkage adjustment to make sure the trans is fully into park; mal-adjustment could cause what you describe. Anyway, start diagnosis at neutral switch and proceed to starter relay. Don't forget to check starter power feed wiring for loose/corroded connections. I've seen many cars exhibit this condition after being driven in heavy rain, etc., and in most cases, the battery wire on the starter, or the ignition trigger connection had become corroded enough that contact was lost, sometimes intermittently. It is important when checking these to actually disconnect these wires and look for corrosion, etc. especially the spade terminal for the trigger wire(be sure to disconnect battery before using tools on the starter battery wire)

you have to take the steering column cover off and then find the little hole near the ignition tumblers. you put the key in and turn it forward one or two clicks, find a small screw driver and push the little pin in the hole. that is what holds the tumblers in place. the ignition should slide out .

Could be.

Also the jiggling thing could be a coincidence. :0)

Tell me this.... when you turn the key, do you hear a CLICK?? If so your starter is probably bad.

Engine will not always start. Battery replaced.

can you hear the start relay under the bonnet clicking when you turn the ignition on?.

if you can...then I suspect your starter motor is dodgy.
