There is a lock out solenoid that is turned on when you depress the brake pedal so you can get it out of park, it is a safety feature, if the brake light switch has a problem the issue of unable to get out of park will occur, check and make sure the brake lights work when this problem happens, if they don't then you either need a brake light switch or the wiring to the switch repaired. 2002 buick century sticks in park positon sometimes

Nest time you can not get it out of park take a look at the brake lights. If the brake lights are not illuminating than you possibly have a bad brake switch. The solenoid that holds the shift lever in park is released when the brake pedal is depressed. If the brake switch is not working the gear shift will not move.

1999 GMC Sierra stuck in drive. What do I do?

First off, set the parking brake, raise vehicle so you can get under it. Remove the shift linkage from the transmission and manually move the shift lever to park. Then try moving the shift mechanism inside the car to park and then through each gear (engine off of course). See if the mechanism sticks, if so, probably a broken tab on the locking mechanism for the shift lever in the steering column. If it moves freely, try the lever on the transmission back and forth through the gear range to see if it sticks. If it sticks, or you can't initially move it by hand, you have a transmission problem that requires trained individuals to fix. If it moves freely also, try lubing the cable with silicone spray at all contact points, especially where it enters and exits any cable sheathing. (spray into sheathing well) If both move freely independent of each other, it may just have been in a bind, put both shifter and tranny lever in park and reattach the shift cable, Then try the gear range again from inside the vehicle.

More likely the shift cable is binding. Also make sure you fully apply the emergency brake when you park before shifting into Park. This will prevent loading the linkage by the parking pawl making it difficult to move the lever. Especially when parking on a hill.

Also make sure you are pressing the brake pedal when shifting our of Park. Sometimes the brake light switch can be intermittent and either the switch is bad or the switch is out of alignment with the brake pedal lever. This not the most common cause.

Why is my transmission hard to shift in my 2007 ford focus

There are 2 different vehicles listed on your question. One is a Chevy Blazer, the other is a 2007 Ford Focus. Don't know which is the problem.

Is this a automatic or a stick shift? I will give you the information about an automatic Ford Focus.

The gearshift is locked into Park until you press on the brake pedal. Sometimes for stick shifts, the clutch pedal has the release. Either way, the release signal unlocks the gearshift. The position of the switch on either the brake pedal lever or clutch lever can be bumped by the Drivers feet.

These switches as well as the release on the gearshift must be aligned (timed), adjusted, etc. so that they work properly. Sometimes this is as simple as looking under the dash and securing the loose switch back on its holder on either the brake pedal or clutch lever.

The other part of this question can be internal to the transmissions or binding in the shift cables or rods.

Somewhere here I hope you have the answer you needed the first time it was answered.

2004 ford mustang locked i park

This is common. Look under the dash at the top of the brake pedal lever. The switch on the brake pedal lever (sometimes on clutch for stick-shifts) often gets hit by the Drivers' feet. You probably have no Brake lights, which is verification of this problem.
The switch sends a signal to release the shifter from Park. Once you get the brake lights working, the car should shift. You will need to either reposition or replace the switch I mentioned.

WHY IS IT HARD FOR ME TO CHANGE FROM PARK TO DRIVE

There are a few possibilities:
There is a park-to-operate interlock feature on your truck. You must depress the vehicle brake pedal to move the shift lever from park to any other position. Sometimes the switch (the brake pedal switch) which provides this signal goes bad, sometimes making contact and providing the signal and sometimes working intermittently. You could have a frayed or broken wire thereabouts.
Sometimes the parking pawl on the transmission which engages the flywheel/flexplate needs adjustment. It is on the driver's side of the transmission. There is a threaded portion of the shift lever shank coming from the steering column or floor shifter with an adjustable nut on it.
Take a look at that, and I hope it helps.

96 Nissan Maxima having problems with automatic gear shift lever. Can't get it out of park. When I can shift into drive/reverse car operates normally. Is there a sensor or link that coould be blown?

sometimes stuff falls down into the cracks where the lever is, so try that. but there is, inside of the console that the lever is on, a cable that wraps around a little plastic roller, and it has gears on it that make it click into Park, or Reverse, or 1,2, OD, whatever. sometimes if those get worn out, the little plastic part will get stuck into park, because it is supposed to lock into park, and you have safety switches in there too so that you cant shift from park without pressing on the brake. so check and see if it is the cable, the check the plastic part, i think it should be green.

When i start my car and press the brake to shift out of park it sticks and wont move. i have and automatic 1998 cadilac catera

HI, there is a solenoid(switch) that's located in shift linkage housing that works in conjunctions with the brake pedal when you shift from park to reverse or drive. this is a safety situation.

Sometimes, this solenoid(switch) can malfunction or die. In this case, it will prevent the gear shift lever from moving into the reverse or parked position. Simply replacing this shift lever solenoid will fix this issue. You can expose the solenoid by disassembling the shift stick housing,

Please rate and have a great day:)
