Please help,
Iv'e replaced my alternater yesterday for the 4th time in 4yrs. Is this really just a " Volvo problem" if not, whats the likely cause. I remove and charge my Battery 2 times daily to get to work and home. otherwise i'll need a jump.
Please help.
Thx! Reuben
Comment by thumpr321, posted on Jun 25, 2008 thanks for feedback however I just checked and there's no alternater light. does this mean complete dash removal? I've had the car 4yrs and don't remember ever seeing one. please explain
in simplest steps to follow.

When you place key into the ignition and turn to "on" position, do you see your alt. light come on? If not, this is the cause of the charging problem. The current has to flow through this light and back to battery to complete the circuit.
Thank you for rating this solution.

Thanks for your advice. My rear passenger turning light is now working due to a wire that was disconnected it now works fine and my dash light is not staying on anymore and no more near miss rear endings. next I dicovered a broken tail light(inside) behind spare tire. I'll fix it with some jb weld and hopefully every thing will charge well again.as far as the radio i don't have one and couldn't find any hot wires.I'm charging my weak battery indoors hopefully for the last time. Thx again!

Dude you saved me paying for a full dionostic check, new battery and or another alternater from autozone. Hope it works...

You have a power drain somewher.
unplug your battery " positive " , wait a few seconds.
put the connector back to the battery and see if it sparks, if it does there is something shorted out and draining your power. probably your alternator was good.
if there is no sparks thencould be your voltage regulator or your battery.
let me kniow

NOPE, YOUR ALTERNATOR IS NOT THE PROBLE. OR THE LIGHT.

TURN ALL LIGHTS ON AND SEE IF THERE IS ONE BLOWN, ALSO IF YOU HAVE AN AFTERMARKET RADIO CHE IT TO, UN PLUG THE POWER FROM THE RADIO THEN UNPLUG THE BATTERY TERMINAL AND -PLUG IT AGAIN IF SPARKS STOP THEN YOUR RADIO IS THE PROBLEM.

IF ANY LIGHT BULB IS BLOWN REPLACE IT AND SEE IF THAT CURES THE PROBLEM.

ALSO ANY INTERIOR LIGHT LIKE DOME LIGHT OR DOOR LIGHT CAN CAUSE THE PROBLEM.

How Do I change the clutch on a 1986 240 Volvo station wagon?

You do not need a simple "solution" from an online forum. What you need is detailed service information. I would recommend spending the small fee (under $30/year) and subscribing to the service information for your vehicle at alldatadiy.com. There. you will find step-by-step instructions along with diagrams and lists of any special tools needed to complete the task.

Down the side of the Engine where the Alternator is there should be a few wires.
1 goes to the oil pressure sensor
Another few wires go to the Alternator there are 2 circuits one is for charging which is a little thicker which is bolted under a nut & a few smaller wires which do 2 things. There is a low current circuit that applies 12v to one side of the battery lamp on the dash & when the enging is running this 12v is on the lamp & the 12v from the battery is on the other side so the lamp is out .
If the alternater isn't turning 0 volts is coming from the alternator & the Battery lamp is on.
These smaller diameter wires are important for the monitoring & charging the battery.
If you can't get the battery lamp & other monitoring lamps on the dash to illuminate when turning the key around to run not start your going to have battery charging problems.
I suggest you check the black plastic insulation carring these wires in them may be cracked or broken.
I own a few 240 series volvo's & I think I have had just about every electrical problem possible.
