Question about 1985 Ford Bronco II
Wont shift into 3-4(overdrive)gear
Your vehicle should have the A4LD trans.Some of those small Bronco's had C-5....3 speed,lockup trans in them.If yours is indeed the O.Drive trans,4th gear in that trans is totally mechanical and hydraulic control.The only electricals in that year trans is lockup apply inside the torque convertor,and that happens after the 3-4 upshift.Later version DID have a solenoid for 4th gear.4th gear consists of the Forward clutch pack applied,and the front band,or O.D. band.This band is applied with a servo piston.It is a steel core piston with a pin and a rubber bonded covering with molded in lip seals.These servos are known for the rubber hardening,and no longer applying the band.Sometimes the band gets burnt to the point of no good,but installing a new piston is possible without removing the trans.Other than the servo piston,or without checking the valves in the valvebody,pretty much the trans would have to come out and be inspected.Good luck.j

Most likely the turning on and off might have trigered or burned out your relay switch located in the front of your engine. The overdrive button on your nissan was only ment to be used sporadically and not as a stick vehicle ( According to your expression ). You can purchase this relay in your nearest nissan dealer. need more info i had a 1984 chevy half ton and first, second, and third worked fine but lock up didnt work. the problem was there was no vacum at a switch under the hood on the fire wall also your shift linkage could be out of adjustment. try driving down the road and raise up a little on the shifter.

Problem solved. I found on the www the wiring diagram, corresponding to the o/d switch. I saw that there is a engine coolant temp switch (at coolant outlet of engine). the connector to it was corroded. So cleaning it,...o/d is now working proper.

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.
