I've had three 626's, all with 4-cylinder engines and all used regular gas.

The owners manual would call for premium. Regular fuel will do just fine in a pinch but you will get less miles to the gallon.

What kind of gas does a maxima 2001

According to page 10-3 of the 2001 Nissan Maxima Owner's Manual:

FUEL RECOMMENDATION
Unleaded premium gasoline with an octane
rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
number (Research octane number 96)
If unleaded premium gasoline is not available,
unleaded regular gasoline with an
octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Research
octane number 91) can be used.
However, for maximum vehicle performance,
the use of unleaded premium gasoline
is recommended.

Engine "knock" is not just an unusual sound - but over time can cause real damage to the engine. You *should* use fuels with the recommended octane levels, but if you choose to use fuel with a lower octane level due to reduce fuel costs - do not repeatedly use fuel that causes engine knock. Find the "sweet spot" between the cost of lower octane fuel and an octane level that does not cause knocking. Expect fuel economy and performance to drop with lower octane fuels, too.

Good luck!

I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. (Not an EVO) does it require premium gas or am i ok with regular 87 octane?

Check your owners manual or if premium fuel is required, it is usually posted near the gas gauge " use premium fuel only ".

What kind of gas do i use

Regular gas is fine for it. It is when you get into higher compression engines (high performance) that you require a higher octane gas. It will say right at the gas gauge if it requires premium gas.

What type of gas does the mazda protege se take

regular 87 octane unleaded is sufficient for this car. putting premium in is a waste of money and can actually hurt performance. the only exception to this can be if you life in an extremely low altitude area (below sea level), in which case you sometimes need a higher octane to compensate for air density.

I have a Mazda 626, 2001 with 124,000 miles. My check engine light went on. What do I need to do? I just recently purchased it from an indiviual. I am low on funds and really can't take it to a dealer...

Take it to Auto-zone or something similar, they will bring out the diagnostic tool, connect and pull the codes for free. Could be as simple as you didn't tighten the gas cap tight enough..

Premium or regular gas

Fuel comes in different grades due to octane levels, the higher grade the higher octane, the higher price. If you have the owners manual or window sticker, you would see that the car was probably made to run on 87 octane (regular unleaded), I have been through the different octane levels for more than 30 years and I have decided that the cheapest runs as well as the most expensive. The higher octane will sometimes cause an engine to ping or rattle under acceleration, if this happens to yours go back to the cheap stuff and everything will be fine. That is my opinion, others may differ, but I run my BMW on the cheapest I can find and I still get 31 MPG hwy.

recommended is just that... a suggestion. most cars will run just fine on regular gas although you may notice a difference from using premium all the time. if you still have the owners manual it should tell you.
