speedometer seems to work when it wants, dealer can't find a problem, of course it always works whe they have it.

Mine is a 2005 and I have the same problem and the dealer can't seem to figure it out. Most times if I stop and restart it will "fix" itself.

I have a 2005 Spectra EX and I had a similar problem with the speedometer and tachometer getting stuck or not working at all. I took it to the dealer and found out I had a faulty instrument board. It fell under warranty and the entire instrument board was replaced at no cost. Try the dealer and see if yours falls into this category too.

Why is speedometer sticking?

if the odometer does not stick, watch carefully , the 1/10s digit.
drive slow, no bumps when it sticks and watch ODOMeter
if odometer dont stick the needle side is, as all do this old.
for 90s cars, vast numbers stick and more every day
as owners hedge , gee $200 fix .or more.......
get a GPS speedo and use that, or glue on a cell phone holder
and use a free app, (GPS speed) to see speed.
there you go, all choices.
the cable has 2 ends.
head end if dead, the speedo and odometer stall.
the other end, has gear to trans tail shaft,
so it measures actually road wheel RPM and converts that to speed.
the cable can be broken on both end or the middle.
the bottom end can fail strip out or its gear go bad.
fixed them all, every which way but loose.
easy no? easypeasy-japaneezey
if the odometer freezes too, that means the cable end is bad.850403f4-cfb0-4822-8bea-bd0bef80f062.jpg

All gauges suddenly not working

Check the fuse panel first. Has anyone been under the dash recently, sounds like a harness plug is not quite home.

Hello, recently we've had problems with the speedometer, i notice that the needle begins to bounce almost like a short, and then usually sticks to whatever the speed your doing, or doesn't work at all....

i know you wont want too hear this but ive been told that this is a common problem and seen friends have to repalce instrument cluster for this problem. also if you do that you should get mileage programmed in new one. my other suggestion might be too go too truck truck acc. shop you ight find a nice after-market one cheaper than dealer.

It is probably the speedometer. Check on ebay for a guy from Winona, MN. who repairs these. He does a great job.

Just bought a 65 mustang coupe. the speedometer doesn't work. the fuel gauge and the other components work on it, but can't figure out why the speedometer doesn't work. i've unsrewed and taken out the...

Remove the speedometer cable and manually turn the cable inside the covering. If the cable turns then the problem is in the transmission. There is a small gear where the cable connects inside the transmission that wears out. Once it does you lose the speedometer. Have this gear replaced or replace it yourself and it should resolve your problem.

Yes the motor is faulty or the circuit that controls it, both the motor and the driver circuit that sends voltage to the motor can cause this issue, have seen both issues many times, I think electronic speedo's are just over complication of a very simple device, i.e. cable driven speedometers.
