Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck
If its a floor shifter there is a plunger under the floor shifter cover. Do u hear a click when u step on the brake pedel? That release the plunger to let u shift the car into gear.
yes just remove the shift lock away from shifter asmbley, this way you can take the key out, if the shifter doesnt release the key wont turn all the way off, leave the lock released but removed from the shifter.
If the vehicle fails to engage in any gear and feels loose the shifter cable is broke. This cable isn't easy to replace, you may want to have a mechanic replace it if your not familiar with it.
a quick fix to solve the problem with the 4wd not working on the sportage is fitst check the vacume soionoid is working lockated by the suspention turet on theL/H side of the engine bay, then, chech hoses going to the hub, if there is still a vacume leek from the hub remove the 6 bolts from the outer hub locker place in vice remove the circlip, remove the spring, remove the spline gear then take the spring and swap it around so that it gose under the gear so that it is in conatant mesh/ lock, build back up and fit, it means the front axle will be live all the time but you will still be able to select 2 /4wd,,
You'll need to get under the truck on the side of the trans (driver side) there will be an adjustment, looesen it move leveler all the way to park and tien nut.
There is a little button in front of the shifter. I pushed on this while moving the shifter back and forth. It immediately went down and I was able to put he car in park and then pulled out the key.
I have the same issue with My Kia Spectra 05. I have to put my car in N and let it roll forward or back for a few inches. Then when I try and put it in park I have to hit it forward to make sure it locks in Park. Then my key will turn all the way to pull it out. So try and hitting the shifter/ gear selector what ever you want to call it up all the way.. Some times it is not locked into park all the way. Hope this helps.
