Hi there try to get a price on the speed sensor located on the transmission this sensor tells the computer how fast the van is going in turn the transmission shifts gears and there will be information sent to the speedometer . the reason the van only goes in low gear is to protect the system because the sensor is damaged so replace the speed sensor and try again , let me know how its running after relpaceing the sensor good luck

Why wont my MPH needle work on my dodge caravan 1994

If the speedometer does not work but the odometer does, the problem is usually in the speedo head.
If both components do not work, the problem may be the speed sensor in the transmission.

1. Check the speedometer cable maybe its not properly connected or you need to buy a new one.

2. If your having a problem with the gear check the transmission oil add some if the oil level is low or check the pressure plate and the release bearing and I hardly recommend to visit a good mechanic.

2000 caravan odometer and speedometer stopped working and transmission started slipping and check engine light came on. All this happen after hitting a pot hole.

You need to have it checked by a mechanic soon! Sounds like you lost communication with the Vehicle Speed Sensor. The engine computer relies on it for shifting the trans and working the speedo, wait too long and you could cause major damage.

Everthing on my dash (speedometer,odometer,fuel

Blown Fuse or fried Circuit board. Take to a local AutoZone, Advance, Murray's, O'reillys or a similar part house for them to check the wiring. I'm assuming the van does not use a mechanical Speedometer or Fuel Gauge.

On the plus side, with no speedometer, your indicated odometer mileage does not increase. Just keep your speed down and your tank full. Kidding, just kidding.

You need to replace the speedometer gear that drives the sensor.

Speedometer not working, high revs & won't shift out of low gear

Your issue is a bad "speed sensor". Your speedometer is controlled by a sensor in your transmission, and when it quits working your speedometer will not work, it can cause very irregular shift patterns and slipping. Replacing your speed sensor should resolve your issues.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.
