Is it a single cam or 24 valve? The single cam is as simple as removing the belt, unplugging and unbolting the alt. and pulling it out. The 24 valve on the other hand is difficult. It has to come out through the wheel well and in order to do this you have to remove the crankshaft pulley, which requires a special tool to hold the flywheel. I also like the explosives method. There are alot of cars I would like to use that tecnique on. Also there is a belt tensioner. It's the pulley mounted on an arm. You'll need a 1/2" breaker bar or a belt tool to pull it and relieve the tension. Place the head of the breaker in the hole on the tensioner and pull it away from the belt. If your's is a 12 valve, this may be the most difficult part of the repair.

Where is the alternator fuse for a 2005 mod landcruiser sahara?

Hi Charles
I haven't seen an Alternator with a Fuse.
They Generate 35-55 or more Amps and are usually connected directly to the Battery Positive. Check at Alt. Main Terminal with MultiMeter. Check for Good Ground.

The small wire on the back of the alternator often comes from Ignition Key + to control the charge rate.
The Modern Alt. also has an internal Regulator Circuit to control charge rate.

If trying to save money.... Alternators can be split open on the Bench and repaired. Just put a mark across joint before opening.
Use a brush hook (make one) to hold brushes back while re assembling.

Items to watch for:
Brushes Worn Out - no juice to Rotor to excite (generate)
Diodes Blown - (Multimeter Test on Diode Function for shorts / open. Simple Unsolder, Press out & replace
Regulator Blown - Buy replacement
Stator Coils Corroded or Shorted/Open or bad solder joints.

Remove Alternator & Bench Test.

Good Luck

How to diagnose and repair bad alternator in your car or truck

Not charging battery alt meter reads 11.49 wont go higher

In case battery is Bad. Stop Engine
Try a substitute Battery... Just use Jumpers Cables with main battery disconnected. Restart
If no change in Voltage (should go up to 13.8 to 14Volts) then your Alternator is Bad. (Belt Not Slipping?)
The Voltage regulator is usually built into the Alternator these days. So...Remove Alternator.
Either Repair it.
Place in Vice. Mark the case next to the screws with a scratch so it lines up on re assembly. Undo screws & Separate.
Faults Usually - Brushes, Diodes or Regulator
Check Brushes are not worn down too far to make contact.
If replacing brushes you will need to make a brush hook to hold brushes back on reassembly. Look for small hole to insert brush holder until both halves are back together.
or Get a Rebuilt one with warranty.

I have a 1999 3,8L ford mustang my tester indecates the alt is overcharging, but the batt light is coming on but it goes off! is there anything i can do to besides replace the alt?

Your alternator-mounted voltage regulator has failed. Luckily, your voltage regulator is
replaceable separately from the alternator (most voltage regulators are integral to the alternator,
and cannot be separately serviced).

Note: this works for 3.8L cobra alternators/voltage regulators only - in the 4.6L model, the
voltage regulator is an integral component of the alternator.

3.8L Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove 4 Torx® head screws holding the voltage regulator to the alternator rear housing. Remove the regulator, with the brush and terminal holder attached.

3. Hold the regulator in one hand and pry off the cap covering the A terminal screw head with a small prybar.

4. Remove 2 Torx® head screws retaining the regulator to the brush holder. Separate the regulator from the brush holder.

Fig. 4. Slide the regulator out-the brushes will move out of the holder

=========================================================
To install:

1. Install the brush holder on the regulator with 2 retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 25-35 inch lbs. (2.8-4.0 Nm).

2. Install the cap on the head of the A terminal screw.

3. Depress the brushes into the holder and hold the brushes in position by inserting a standard size paper clip, or equivalent tool, through both the location hole in the regulator and through the holes in the brushes.

Fig. 6. When installing the regulator, press the brushes back into the housing

Fig. 7. Use a thin piece of soft material, like this plastic wire tie, to hold the brushes in position while replacing the regulator, or use a paper clip inserted in the hole

4. Install the regulator/brush holder assembly and remove the paper clip. Install the attaching screws and tighten to 20-30 inch lbs. (2.3-3.4 Nm).

5. Connect the negative battery cable.

I think we need a new alternator - the alternator warning light is on - tried fiddling with some loose or funky looking wires with the battery - pretty sure its the alrernator- do you know what kind or...

follow these steps tp prevent replacing the altonator uneccesarily

Check that the fan belt is on and turning when the motor idles

If you have a multi meter set it to 20V

With the motor idling test with the multimeter across the two poles of the battery

the reading should be around 13.5 - 14.5 volts

If you dont have a multimeter remove the brushes and check them

They are located on the opposite side of the pully on the alternator (towards dipstick)

the brushes pop out real easy (just 2 star screws0

You can identify the brushes ( they are usually in a white plastic housing with a round black piece in the middle)

the entire unit is known as the brushes

Once removed there should be two copper contacts approx 50mm long

if they look questionable replace them and try it again

please keep in mind that you need to give the car a small rev to get the altonator to kick in.

88 acura lgnd alternator belt

I wrote another blog about getting the alternator (belt) off. The back cover of the alternator comes off with 3 nuts. The brushes are in a little holder with two screws holding it in place. Your will find that one or both of the brushes are worn down. You can get just the brushes on Ebay for $8 and shipping for a couple of pairs. They are soldered into the backside of the holder. Don't "blow" the dust around and simply wipe the commutator with a shop towel and put it back together.

Alternator not charging battery on 2007 f-150. zero ohms between battery negative and alternator housing. battery voltage at positive terminal on back of alternator. battery voltage at red wire of three...

Replace the Alternator. Sounds like the internal brushes have worn out as you appear to have the correct feeds to it. If you are tempted to open the alt to have a look at the brushes, be careful as incorrect assembly can cause serious damage as can incorrect re-assembly. You can simply replace the brushes but I would advise against it as the copper rings the brushes rub on (the slip rings) will also be worn and require replacement, this is difficult if you do not have the experience. Also, the bearings should also be replaced as they will no doubt be worn too. Altogether a specialist job, so grab yourself an new or exchange alternator. if you have to get a second hand unit, have it tested BEFORE you fit it..

I need to replace my alternator

You need to first take off youre serptine belt. Inspect that and generally its a good idea to replace. Next there is a electrical connection on the alternator. DISCONNECT the battery FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then disconnect the connection on the alternator, there are a couple of bolts that attach the alternator to the engine. and then simply bolt on the new one, re-attach the electrical connection and then re-install the (new) belt.
