I had the same problem on my 1984 F-250. Only mine would go in reverse just fine. The problem i had is my forward clutch went out. After you make sure you have pleanty of tranny fluid take it strait to a shop to have it rebuilt. Or see if you can find one at a pick-a-part

Drive on 1998 mercedes e240 will not engage after 3 - 5 minutes idle

sounds like the fluid level is low or filter needs to be change, either of them will cause the transmission to slip, as the fluid warms up it expands and becomes less dense witch is why you notice it more when cold, but will continue to get worse and eventually ruin the trans.

1995 lincoln occasionally has problems getting in gear to go. Seems like it is stuck in neutral. Lasts a few seconds then it gets into gear and goes.

SEEMS LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOW.TRANSMISSION SLIPPING TRYING TO GO IN DRIVE.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. IF LOW ADD FLUID UNTIL YOU REACH FULL MARK ON TRANSMISSION DIP STICK. WITH ENGINE RUNNING A IN OPERATING TEMPERATURE.IF FLUID LEVEL OKAY.CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER IF YOU HAVE NOT CHANGED IN A LONG WHILE.A DIRTY STOPPED UP FILTER WILL CAUSE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP.CANT PICK UP FLUID.

The transmission takes a few seconds to engage. You can put it in any gear but you have to wait for it to kick in. After it is going down the road, it shifts fine, as long as you don't accelerate hard.

It's time for a trasmission fluid and filter change.

They are relatively inexpensive at most one stop auto shops, however your vehicle is extremely easy to change the transmission fluid and filter.

It is located under the front bumper on the bottom side of the engine. 10 to 16 bolts and the transmission pan is off, two to four bolts to remove the filter, and then reverse.

Please do not do this yourself if you are not positive you can do it correctly.

The good news is, if you get your transmission fluid and filter changed in the next 50 miles you drive, you are likely to avoid catastrophic transmission problems.

It's possible a new filter and fluid may take care of this, check your transmission fluid for color,it should be clear and ruby red with now burnt smell. If its a reddish brown and cloudy definitely time for a transmission filter/fluid service.

Car starts fine and goes in reverse fine

First thing is check your transmission fluid level. 2nd thing is, if you haven't changed filter & fluid in transmission in a while, spend the money & do it, or have it done.

Sluggish Transmission when cold

You need to change the transmission fluid and filter as soon as possible. Being sluggish when cold is a sign of a very clogged up filter.
