Your problem could be anything from a loose fuel cap to a leak anywhere in your evaporative system. Before doing a leak diagnosis, it's probably easiest to check the fuel cap to make sure it's installed properly and clear the light and trouble code. If the lamp and code don't come back within a week, you can probably chalk it up to a loose fuel cap at some point.

If the code insists on returning, then you may want to start checking for leaks. There are two commonly methods for diagnosing the system. Both involve energizing the canister close valve to seal the system and then pumping pressure into the fuel tank. In one method, the tank is pressurized with smoke and the vehicle is inspected visually for the smoke exiting. In the second method, the technician uses a sensitive listening device to detect escaping air.

I've never had much luck with the smoke method, and I cannot recall using the listening method. The dealer's scan tool provides the capability of forcing the evaporative leak test to run. With this capability, the dealer technician can see whether the leak is currently present. If so, the technician can block different portions of the evaporative system at the appropriate time while the test is running to narrow the area where the leak may be. If the leak is intermittent, then it's almost certainly caused by the canister close valve, since that's the only moving part that can cause a leak in the system.

2003 X-type code 0442

Below is some information for you. Make sure you check all the fuel vapor lines around the gas tank. I have found with this code through experience it was a bad gas cap, bad conection in a vapor line around the gas tank (stuff from the road knocking things) or the canister assy itself. By the way it's not something that will cause you to get stuck somewhere and should be safe to drive until the problem is taken care of. Hope this helps....

Codes p 0442 and p 0455

this obd2 trouble code table can help you understand the meaning of code, for these codes, you can try,
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses.

Code 0442 dodge caravan 2005. What could it mean?

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms: You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal

With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

Hope helps.

Troubleshooting code # 0442 on 2002 Jeep Liberty

Im guessing its a P0442. That means:
EVAP LEAK MONITOR MEDIUM 0.040 LEAK DETECTED
Causes of this could be a few things.
I recommend replacing the gas cap. Then take it to an auto place to get them to erase the code.
If it comes back on then...
Under the hood is a small green cap. That is the EVAP line. Follow that all the way to the gas tank and see if you see any leaks. If you do, replace/repair it.
If you dont then the only thing you honestly can do is take it to a mechanic with an EVAP Emission Leak Detector [EELD]
Good Luck!!
