Question about 2004 Saturn VUE

3 Answers

Steering Binding I recently noticed after driving my wife?s 2004 Saturn Vue that the steering wheel does not return back to center normally (sticks or holds the position you are turning) when making a left hand turn, turning to the right it is normal and free. I removed the left front tire and disconnected the left outer tie rod to see if the ball joint or strut plate were binding, they moved freely. I did observe a clicking noise coming from the left front, I suspect a CV joint, however the boots are not torn nor do I see any visible grease. My question is could a bad CV joint cause binding in the wheel or could this be a possible bad steering rack? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Goldwinger.
Yes it could be an axle, It could also be the strut tower The strut bearing is on top of your strut and could be a problem I have seen it before and also the Axle do that, I don't think it would be the steering rack because I think it would do that either way you turn the steering wheel. I would stick with your first thought. Axle, sure sounds like an axle, The Clicking is usually the First indication of that. So I would take it out and check it or just replace it and I think that will solve your problem. If not get back to me and when I get in from the Shop I will check back here and see if you got it or not. Thanks Goldwinger and hope that helps you out some what. Bear001

A cv joint doing that maybe but it would make lots of noise when you turn and go the rack and pignion most likely and something else when you turn the wheel is the stering hard easy hard easy the stering colum joint might be hard and gonna prevent the wheel from moving freely try lubbing the joint with loose nut put some on the joint turn the wheel apply more lub try it out cheers pierre

Steering wheel turns but wheels don't... what's wrong?

Most likely a steering rack issue if both wheels do not turn. If only one wheel does not turn, possible broken tie rod end. May also have a broken steering U-joint between steering shaft and steering gear. ( uncommon )

Sometimes the steering wheel will not turn and once the key is placed in the ignition it will not turn

The wheel is binding on the ignition interlock.
Turn the wheel either clockwise or counter-clockwise as you turn the ignition key.

When turning the steering wheel of my 2003 Saturn Vue, it makes a gutteral noise from the steering column. It is like a bullfrog croaking as long as the wheel is being turned and returned.

mine did the same thing. Where the steering column goes through the firewall (floor) there is a rubber seal. That seal has gotten dry. Apply a small amount of lube where the shaft goes through and turn the steering wheel. This helped eliminate my squeal.

2006 Saturn steering wheel vibrates/shakes when coming to a stop.

your brake rotors need to be turned down. you need to check the brake pads while your at it. if they are thin. change them and pack the bearings while there out. and change the inter greace seals. then your good for another 50 - 70 000 miles. also ask them to pull the rear drums and check for wear. they call it free inspection. this is sometimes caused from water splashing on hot rotors, makes the brake pedal to pulsate...

good luck & good day

Thanks for your reply. I will replace the axle shaft and recheck since I I already have a problem with that. I?m wondering if the steering u-joint or knuckle could be binding? I would think it would effect...

Yes your correct, It would go either way if it were the steering U-joint, I have ran into this problem several times and it always seems to fix it, A matter of fact we just did a 04 Jeep same problem it would stick and Click when turning to the left Then it started shaking, Replacing the axle did the Trick. Hope It Does the same for You, And No problem, Its always nice to help someone whom Is A nice person to deal with, Thanks Bear001
