Power steering problem

Sounds like the pump pressure valve is not working when cold and should be replaced.> It is inside the pump where the pressure line connects to the pump.

My 2001 pontiac montana is having problems with the power steering i checked the power steering fluids are ok but when i am driving and turning i have no power steering and makes a loud noise

Check your engine belts, you may have a seperate one for the powersteering,

if it is a serpentine belt, it may have stretched and may need to be replaced.

it could also be the belt tensioner, when the engine is off, the belt should,

be tight, check your belt or belts for cracks, it may not be grabbing the pulleys,

it could be slipping, get some liquid soap, put it in a spray bottle and spray

your belts, then start the engine and turn your power steering from right to

left, if the noise stops, you need to change your belt. if it does not , then

it could be the belt tensioner or a pulley that is binding. good luck!

I have a 2004 pontiac montana and when i turned the ac on my steering wheel gets hard and don't want to turn

Dear Madam or Sir,

the problem can be a result of a loose auxiliary drive belt. If your car is equipped with a electro-hydraulic power steering it is possible that the ac system produces a system voltage drop so the power steering cannot work properly.

You should see a mechanic soon to get to the heart of the matter .

Buzzy sound when right turning pontiac montana

This sound you speak of will not be transmission, nor RPM (Engine) related. It appears that your Power steering belt is either loose, or the PSP (Power Steering Pump Pressure Switch), may be bad. Is your Check Engine Light ever come on? When you say you're turning, the pressure supplied to the power steering system at low speeds is much greater than while driving down the Interstate. The only other "vibration or buzzing" noise would be coming from the rack and pinion assembly.

Have someone in the driver's seat with the parking brake on and engine started. With the vehicle on the ground, have them turn the steering wheel slowly through the full motions about three or four times. This purges the air (if there is any), from the power steering system. This also gives you the ability to "look" at the P/S Belt on right AND left turns to see as to whether your problem lays with air in the system or too much pressure.

By the way, NEVER use "Belt Dressing" on any of your belts. They sell the stuff, but it's just a quick fix to a belt sound. Use a round table candle to "lubricate your belts, for you probably already have a candle and it doesn't affect the belt or belt life.

Good Luck,

Power steering, works 1 way but not other

You will have to replace the pump. try removing the pump and see if it turns with the engine off and the key unlocked . Even though it is hard . If it turns replace the pump.

I am being told to replace the bolt joint because the steering is making a squeaking, grating sound when I turn it. Do you think I should replace it or try the power steering fluid?

check power steering add if needed if still squeaking check see if belt sliping if not that check the front end parts like ball joint and wheel bearing
