Question about Renault Sport
Smell similar to burning insulation when roof is operated. Noticed this small now when car is started, but not so strong. I feel there is some overheating in the high current circut. Car is presently with Renault but they have not found anything. I do not feel they have tried. Renault say that they have not replicated the smell. Unfortunately they are next to a fish skinning factory which emits a dreadfull stench. I am a retired enginneer and not happy with Renault's cavilier attitude and feel there is a strong possibility of a fire. On my telling the garage this I was told and I repeat. 'We have not had a fire on this model.' That really fills me with confidence. The car belongs to my partner who and I am not comfortable with her having to drive it with this fault.
I would suggest checking the alternator. It sounds like the stator windings are shorted. I have had similar smells both a Nissan Sentra and a Jeep Wagoneer. Both times it was the alternator going out. The smell would get worse when the air conditioning or other accessories were in use. In both cases the alternator heated up very quickly.
The second suggestion would be an accessory drive belt slipping due to a bearing in an idler pully going bad. Look for a very glazed surface on the drive belt.
