That transmission is the 42 LE,used to be known as the 606,the sister trans of the minivans' 42 TE,aka 604.Yes,first and foremost, the Check Engine light needs to be read with a scan tool, and the trouble codes recorded,or written down.Diagnosing the trouble codes is part of determining the problem. It is a step by step procedure eliminating or confirming problem areas.Input and output speed sensors and PRNDL needs to be observed,as well as the CVI's or Clutch Volume Indexes.Chrysler's Transmission Control Module's (TCM) monitors clutch pack clearances (there are 5 packs) by an assigned numerical value. It can be observed by a technician, and known by the numeric value,if the clutch pack has lost clearance and worn out. Many things to look at by a qualified technician.
Is you check engine light on? Is your speedometer working properly? What's going on is that the trans. computer is detecting a problem and puts the car in "limp in" mode. In "limp in" mode it doesn't allow the car to shift to 3rd gear. It keeps it stuck in second gear.
You'll need to take your car to a shop that is able to scan your system to find out which sensor is bad on your trans. Definitely call around to find the best deal on hooking a scanner to your car. Some shop feel that 10 min. of their time is really high. This is all it takes 10min. to scan. Once you know which sensor is going out, pick up the sensor and replace it. Most of the sensors on your trans. are very reasonably priced and take only a few minutes to replace.
