My 350 engine

I just put a 350 in my car and i don't know which piston is the first one

The firing order is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2.
The drivers side, starting at the front is 1, 3, 5, 7.
The passenger side plugs/cylinders starting at the front is 2, 4, 6, 8.

Engine is knocking needing to know anything and everything that could cause this. We just replaced the transmission a week ago and we have an O2 sensor out.


Engines can make many different noises and people will describe them as knocks, pings, rattles or thumps. A true "knock" is caused by rod or main bearings hitting against the crankshaft. The general cause of that is either too much space between the bearing and crankshaft or insufficient oil pressure to maintain the distance between the bearing and crankshaft. Sometimes you can use a heavier grade oil so that the oil doesn't leak out of the bearing space so quickly. If you're currently using 5 W 15, go to a 10 W 30 or maybe even a 15 W 50. If you can't make the noise go away with that, either the bearings are too worn or it's a different problem. If the engine has less than a couple hundred thousand miles, the only reason for bearings to go bad would be inadequate maintenance.

Other problems that can result in noises like that are:

Piston slap. That's when the skirt (lower part) of the piston is slightly worn and is enough smaller than the cylinder that the skirt "pops" from one side to the other as the engine runs. It's more of an annoyance than a real problem, especially since piston slap typically goes away as the engine warms up a little. It typically takes just a few seconds to go away. If it's piston slap don't worry about it until the engine is rebuilt. Piston slap is quite common among many of the GM 350's, especially in engines that go short distances a lot or don't get adequate maintenance.

Fuel "pinging". That's when the fuel ignites too quickly and causes a sound like something rattling around inside the engine when you step on the accellerator. Use a fuel octane booster or change the engine timing.

Hydraulic lifter noises sounds more like a tapping sound and is usually caused by inconsistent oil changes

When making a swap like that, the car tells you where things need to be so that they don't interfere with anything. What I'd do is go to a local scrapyard and take everything off another 350 that looks like it will work in what you are putting it into. As you remove the parts, take pictures and make notes of where everything goes. In doing that, you will have all the bolts, brackets and spacers to put it on your engine. Chevy engines are good like that as they are drilled and tapped to interchange. There were no 350's in '49 so you will never find an original setup.

What is the case surrounding the piston


Its called the bore.Some have them cast with the engine block.Some have a sleeve that is put in after the casting.this one is sometimes removable and may be replaced.A common term is the piston sleeve.Hope this helps

Does anyone know or have the timing specs for a 350 tpi


Not to be rude. But if you dont know what your doing, Don't **** around with your engine timing. It is very crucial that this is done properly. Messing up your engine timing can cause your pistons to possibly drive into your sparkplugs, causing engine failure, and possibly a blown motor.

I just checked Ebay, and there are two listed. You might try Craigs List.

(Tips from me:
Port the Vortec head. Open the Intake and Exhaust ports, by smoothing them out, and smoothing the casting sprue lines out.

Put the Intake gasket, and the Exhaust gasket on the head, (After marking the area with Prussian Blue)
Scribe the opening of the gasket, onto the head, then match the ports to the scribed lines.

You also should round the valve guides top surface. (Where the valve stem meets the guide) There is a square edge that needs to be rounded. This square edge interferes with the fuel/air mixture, as the sharp edge breaks the fuel/air mixture down into droplets.
You want to keep the fuel/air mixture atomized, Not droplets.

Also narrow the casting that comes up the side of the valve guide. (Squared off shape that follows up the guide, and makes the Vortec shape swirl shape in the Intake port) Narrow it to more of a small rounded edge.

Do not polish the Bottom of the intake ports. Leave them as a rough casting. Smooth, and polish the Sides, and Top of the Intake port. (Do not get Extreme! You'll go into the water jacket with your die grinder! Factory may have had a casting shift that day. Just smooth things up)

Makes a nice swirl pattern for the fuel/air mixture.
If you polish the floor, (Bottom), of the Intake port, you will create Two swirl patterns, and they will collide with each other, making droplets again. (They cancel each other out. You want one nice swirl pattern flowing through the Intake port)

I can bring my 1985 Fiero up to 155Mph, (On dragstrip set up for this, tires, and proper safety equipment used). I can also 'Keep my foot' out of the throttle, and get 45 miles to the gallon on the highway.

You can use flat top 350 Chevy pistons. The 2.5 Vin R Fiero engine has a 4 inch bore like a small block Chevy. The pistons can be put on the Fiero rods. Same wrist pin size. The piston drops down into the engine block, about .030 below deck height.

(Wrist pin to piston crown height, is .030 shorter with 350 Chevy piston, compared to stock Fiero piston. You can buy 4 - 350 Chevy pistons AND rings, compared to the price of just the rings, for a Fiero!)

(Thirty thousandths. Real close to 1/32nd of an inch. .03125 is 1/32nd of an inch)

Fiero's have dish head pistons, so the drop in deck height, and using a Flat Top 350 Chevy piston equals out. (Better flame travel with flat top piston. Better burn, more power. Uses more of the fuel/air mixture than a dish head design)
If you can't afford to have them balanced, use a beam scale, and balance them yourself.

What size engine and transmission do i need for 24inch rims?


best bang for your buck 350 cid with a turbo 350 or 700r4 ... the 350 engine can be stroked out to 383 using the internals:pistons and crank from a 400 in big block... but just stroking a 350 on a hot tranny with low gears to drive those big wheels is important get a 4;11 low gear ratio you ll be able to drag that monster.
