Question about 1999 Ford Escort

Engine idles lumpy - why?

Just bought an escort 1.4 lx 1999 today, great runner, but noticed it has a lumpy idle when I pull up at lights, especially after being on a fast road it seemed. Also didn't like it when I accelerated after not having foot on gas and not changing down a gear, e.g. going down a hill in 4th and then accelerating up the other side, it did a strange judder as I put my foot on the gas, what could that be?  I part exchanged it with the same model just a few years older, so I'm used to driving this type of car, but never had these problems with the other one.... Many thanks D

My 1999 ford escort lx is jolting when accelerating and when idling it feels like it wants to die but doesnt

Water in gas, plugged fuel injector, plugged fuel filter, bad plugs or wires. Its tune-up time! Start with the easy stuff and go from there. Hopefully it's an easy fix.
Could also be plugged catalytic convertercatalytic converter or bad torque converter

It stalls out at a dead stop or when turning.

When you say or when turning I assume this is because the revs drop down to the same idle speed the engine would do at a "Dead stop" if so this is probably a bad or sticky ICV (idle Control Valve) Did you notice any lumpy or high idle speeds in the lead up to this problem?

My 2001 Escort, 70k runs great but a definate vibration at the steering wheel. I notice it more when cold andwhen it warms up it is not as bad but still noticable vibration at the steering wheel. ...

That mechanic wasn't lying. I currently own three of them and I know a lot of people that own them and they all have a rough idle. The engines are internally balanced and they don't have dampeners, so you get the engine vibration transferred to the car and that is what you are feeling.

Ford escort 1.6i 16v been running lumpy at first start then after about 30secs it starts run fine have noticed idle does drop now again never cuts out had new lambda and cat plugs leads the lot

But what is your complaint?
All cars have to run lumpy at first when they are cold, because fuel will condense on the inside of the intake manifold. You should always assume it take a while to warm up. It takes 30 seconds for everything to get fully oiled anyway. But a smaller sparkplug gap will improve cold performance, at the sacrifice of mileage.

PVC valve is not metering air correctly, it will appear ok shaking it but looses it ability to maintain proper position causing a medium to gross vacuum leak.
