Power steering problems

I've been having problems with the power steering on my 02 sedona. It comes & goes & the problem is when turning the wheel will become very hard to turn, then go back to normal. There does appear to be a small power steering fluid leaking out of a small metal hose that is located in front of the radiator (I don't know what the part is, but I think that may need to be replaced). It has never been completely out of ps fluid, but has run lower. The place I have the oil changed at says i need a new ps pump & a new rack & pinion (for about $1,000.) I don't know if that is what is needed, but would like to replace the part I described above first. Any idea what it is? Any idea on where to find a diagram of the engine so I can identify it?
Thanks

I have the same problem. I have had it in and they said nothing was wrong. Sometimes I can go weeks without a problem with the steering and then it comes back. What to do?

The fan belt is slipping when you put the power steering under load. Get some belt dressing or replace the belt......

I was told that the steering knuckle between the firewall and the rack just needs to be lubricated so I took a small funnel mounted on a stick with a hose running down it about 20 in. long and poured a little bit of trans mission fluid onto the knuckle and drove cautiuosly turning the steering left to right to let lubricant do its job never had the problem come back but as a precaution once a since then I relube the knuckle

Followed your advice. Sprayed some WD-40 on the knuckle. Worked the steering back and forth a few times to break up any corrosion and then soaked the knuckle with a good quality oil. Good as new!! Thanks so much for the tip.

I have looked into the problem further and also found thew steering knuckle behind both wheels has a rubber boot that rips and causes the joint to dry up and seize I am replacing them and hope this is the only problem.

Posted on Oct 11, 2008

There is an intermediate shaft on the steering column. It is a between the fire-wall and steering rack, it has a u-joint. This U-joint rusts and binds up intermitently. Replacing that shaft corrects this condition almost always.

This is absolutely correct. Kia issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) for this, but should have issued a recall. You can spray it lube as a temporary solution but replace it or have it replaced.

ya but what happens when you replace this, and it still doesn't work? I have a 2004 Kia Sedona been in the garage for 3 weeks now mechanic tryin to figure out what it could be , replaced rack and pinion, column, shaft, 3 new pumps, nothing is working.. steering only works when rpms are increased

SOURCE: what do bellow boots do?

all they do is keep dirt and water from getting into the steering unit, they are seals, if your steering is acting up it is to late, the damage has been done by the torn boot.

SOURCE: rack and pinion removal and installation

it is sort of a strange deal but you have to remove the cowl and the wiper assembly and access it through there. You can get the step by step instructions from autozone

Is it very difficult to change the power steering pump in a 2004 kia sedona?

  1. Remove the Power Steering belt.
  2. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering pump. Take caution as there may be some pressure.
  3. Remove the bolts holding the Power Steering pump to the pump mount.
  4. Install the new Power Steering pump.
  5. Reconnect the power steering hoses.
  6. Reconnect the Power Steering belt.
  7. Top off with fluid.
  8. Start up the vehicle.
  9. Turn the wheel to the left.
  10. Top off with fluid.
  11. Turn the wheel all the way to the right.
  12. Top off with fluid.
  13. Repeat the last 4 steps until the fluid level doesn't change much, and is topped off.

It might be a failing power steering rack as well...classic symptoms are very stiff when first starting vehicle or at a stoplight, then loosens up as rpms increase.

This sounds like textbook steering rack failure. If the internal seals wear out the rack will leak fluid internally, causing the exact symptoms you're describing. These can be rebuilt, but it's hardly worth the effort. It's less headache and only slightly more expensive to replace it.

Power steering problems

Very common on the Sedonas, the intermediate shaft u-joint becomes corroded from road grime/salt TSB(KT2008101402). It connects the steering wheel to the rack outside the firewall. It will bind and then release, but will work fine for a while, when oiled or soaked with water (while it's raining). The only solution is replacement...easy to do (1/2 hour job for DIY'r). part #0K52Y 32550
