1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Approx. 165480 mi. and well looked after. Took in for coolent leak (puddle under engine) and reservoir levels always low (duh). On 9/30/10 @ AAA shop told me they did coolent flush, etc. told me that was fine but I needed H2O pump bad and needed replaced. $446.36 pump. Seemed fine...for a bit ( also AAA never showed me old H2O part). On 10/19/10 took back to same shop due to cont'd. low levels in reservoir (no overheating at any time) test again. Trans cooler lines small leak found...future repair & est. ( $365.55) no repair there. On 11/16/10 coolent levels still running low (have to keep in back of car) and dropping often. Shop tests again. Show me small leak coming from behind H2O pump also tell me coolent is streaming out as I drive so I don't see puddle under car and tell me need to replace front timing cover gaskets? Part not too $ but labor$$$$ due to having to remove new H2O pump est.$687.79. Then on the "QT" recommends I loosen radiator cap 1 click to relieve pressure for awhile due to $$ issues. (single mom). Went for 2nd opinion to another shop where priveous repairs & honest work had been done 5or 6x's and in business 38 yrs.(would have gone there first but they told me not to risk over heating... (they are quite far distance ). New shop does pressure test on cooling system. Coolent leak orig. from by-pass hose connect at H2O pump. Hose appears to have been replaced (aftermarket label on hose and clamp) Accessed by-pass hose by partial diassemble and found hose clamp at H2O pump very loose causing leak. No hole/leak in hose itself. They repositioned clamp and tightened. Pressure test to verify repair. Did not have to remove H2O pump to do repair. New shop went from initial fee of 183.02 to $75.34. Done deal. Contacted AAA for some answers and possible reimbursments. Your opions please! Many thanks, Holly and little Zane.

I would contact the BBB about the AAA shop. They were taking advantage of you not to mention they did not warranty there work. Plus if they changed the pump they were the ones that left the clamp loose. In the future you should just take it to the shop you know and trust even if it cost you a little to have it towed there, it will be less than getting taken advantage of. It hard to find a good honest shop and it sounds like you have one so give them the business they deserve it.

Where is the coolent sensor on 1996 grand cheroke larado 5.2 motor?

This message is for the coolant level sensor. The coolant level sensor is in the coolant reservoir in the right rear corner of the engine compartment.

The sensor is easy to replace. It has a two wire electrical connector which you'll unplug first. The sensor itself is held into the reservoir with a rubber seal. To remove the sensor all you'll have to do is pull up and pop it out of the rubber seal.

The coolant level sensor is what is monitored by the information center. The coolant temperature sensor is monitored by the powertrain control module.

The coolant LEVEL sensor is monitored by the vehicle information center, not the coolant temperature sensor. The temperature sensor is for the gauge on the dash and is monitored by the powertrain control module. If there was a problem with this sensor the check engine light would be on.

Hope this helps.

My 2003 jeep grand cherokee laredo has a problem with my coolant reservoir drains quickly and i also have condensation on inside of window. when i turn on the heater i see dust or steam come from...

Your water heater core is beginning to leak. Eventually, you will find an antifreeze puddle on the passenger side floor which can eventually lead to the rupture of the heater core and a large amount of antifreeze in gaseous form within the cars interior.

It is time for a new heater core. Should you want to go the cheapest route, you can purchase a bottle of copper plugging agent. Ask your local car part guru what he has to plug a leak in the heater core.

Be forewarned: should you go this cheap route, you risk clogging your heater core for good and you will no longer have heat until you replace the heater core.

Need to find the headlight relay for my 1996 jeep cherokee laredo

Look under the hood for a plastic rectangular box mounted close to the top of the engine compartment, passenger side. Remove the lid by compressing the plastic clips and look inside that cover for which relay is for the headlights - there may be 2, but not likely.

Does the coolant reservoir to overflow tank need to be full for 1996 jeep grand cherokee 6cyl 4.0l gas vin s laredo if it is empty will it cause radiator to over heat.

It should have the level maintained in it as marked on it. If it is empty it will not cause over heating (it just holds the extra fluid) but a leak causing a low coolant level, stuck thermostat, clogged radiator, bad cap or improper pressure will.

Life expentancy of 1996 grand jeep cherokee engine

If the engine doesnt smoke to much and if you dont have to add much oil between oil changes and you cant hear any unusal noises from the engine you should be able to run that car for many more miles. My dad has a 92 Jeep Cherokee and he over 300,000 miles on it and it still goes as long as you take care of it with regular oil changes you should have no problems
