I have a 2004 X type Jaguar. I have the saddle gas tank removed from the car. I am having trouble removing the large plastic ring to remove the fuel pump. Is there a trick to do so. I have rented a special tool that goes over the ring but it still will not turn.

If it is a plastic tank beware!

The fuel pump and fuel gauge sender assembly is generally retained by a large screwed ring and sealed by a large O ring.

The trouble is, once the ring is removed the threaded neck of plastic tanks tends to grow and the ring has to go back very quickly.
There are many tales of people not being quick enough and having to replace the tank.

I am fairly sure there will be a service tool dedicated to removing the large plastic ring but I have always managed with a hammer and blunt screwdriver to get things moving and then a chain wrench, though a strap wrench might also work.

The fuel pump is inside the fuel sending unit. The sending unit is mounted on the topside of the fuel tank. There is a large O-ring that seal the sending unit to the tank (so gas does not leak out). This is a tedious job and requires the tank to be dropped. if the tank is full, the task of dropping the tank will be more dangerous. The fuel filler hose, fuel vapor hose, fuel supply line, fuel return line, and the electrical harness will need to be disconnected before you release both tank support straps. ***NOTE: the two fuel-lines coming off the sending unit are well designed to make them easy to remove. Personaly this design is one of my favorites. No special tools are needed to release the connections.***After the tank is slowly lowered onto the floor then you can start removing the sending unit. There is a round metal ring with four securing tabs. You will see a light blue plastic pin. This pin must be pulled/removed before the metal ring can be removed. NOTE: make sure your work area is clean, free of trip hazards, and no sparks or open flames. After the metal ring is removed, then the sending unit can be pulled out and replaced.

not easy has it has anti syphon if you remove the rear seat cushion by releasing 4 little levers 2 each side under edge of seat there are access points under black plastic gromments i dont no why you are removing fuel but to get it all out you will have to access both sides because it is a saddle tank

TO REMOVE FUEL TANK FIRST YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE FUEL SYSTEM BEEN DEPRESSURIZE. YOU CAN REMOVE FUEL PUMP RELAY LET CAR RUN UNTIL DIES LACK OF GAS. THEN CRANK ENGINE OVER FEW TIMES MAKE SURE ALL GAS OUT OF FUEL LINES. THEN REMOVE FUEL CAP THEN DRAIN FUEL TANK.YOU CAN BUY A SIPHON AT ANY AUTO PARTS STORES, DONT SIPHON GAS WITH MOUTH CAN BE VERY FATAL.ONCE FUEL OUT OF TANK. SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACK STANDS, MAKE SURE VECHICLE SITTING ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND. LOOK UNDERNEATH VECHICLE REMOVE FUEL FILTER DISCONNECT FUEL PUMP ELECTRICAL WIRE CONNECTOR, THEN REMOVE EVAP CANISTER, VENT SOLENOID, AND VAPOR LINES DISCONNECT FUEL LINES, THEN REMOVE THE LOWER FILLERHOSE GOING INTO FUEL TANK. LOOK AROUND TANK YOU PROBABLY HAVE TO REMOVE HEAT SHIELD AROUND GAS TANK AND REMOVE EXHAUST PIPES IF IN THE WAY. GET A LARGE FLOOR JACK AND THE PLACE A PIECE WOOD ON FLOOR JACK SADDLE.THEN RAISE FLOOR JACK JUST ENOUGH SUPPORT FUEL TANK THEN REMOVE FUEL TANK SUPPORT STRAPS THEN SLOWLY LET DOWN THE FUEL TANK. TO FINISH DISCONNECTING FUEL LINES AND REMOVING FUEL PUMP. BE SURE AFTER YOU DEPRESSURIZE FUEL SYSTEM TURN OFF RADIO AND REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

you first need to remove the Fuel tank
then the pump


Disconnect Battery
Drain fuel tank if possible.
Remove filler cap
Remove rear seat cushion
Detach Wiring harness
Remove rear subframe
Detach Filler
Disconnect filter
Disconnect purge pipe
Disconnect evap emisions hose
Remove fuel tank support strap retaining bolts
Remove tank

then
Disconnect electrical connector
Remove Locking ring using Jaguar tool 310-072A
Remove transfer pump

TO REMOVE FUEL TANK YOU FIRST RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE.THEN YOU RAISE THE VECHICLE AND SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.THEN YOU DRAIN FUEL OUT OF FUEL TANK.YOU CAN GO TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORE BUY A SIPHON.DONT SIPHON GASOLINE WITH YOUR MOUTH.SWALLOWING GAS AND FUMES COULD BE FATAL.WHEN ALL FUEL OUT THE FUEL TANK.REMOVE THE FUEL FILLER.DISCONNECT THE ELECTRICAL WIRING TO FUEL TANK.THEN DISCONNECT ALL THE HOSES FROM THE FUEL TANK.PLACE A LARGE FLOOR JACK CENTER OF THE FUEL TANK.PLACE A PIECE PLY WOOD OVER FLOOR JACK LIFTING SADDLE TO KEEP FROM PUTTING A HOLE IN FUEL TANK.START RAISING FLOOR JACK UNTIL SADDLE TOUCH GAS TANK JUST ENOUGH TO HOLD TANK IN PLACE.THEN YOU REMOVE FUEL PUMP SUPPORT STRAP BOLTS DROP FUEL TANK DISCONNECT FUEL SUPPLY AND RETURN HOSES AND DISCONNECT FUEL VAPOR LINES FROM PRESSURE RELIEF ROLLOVER VALVE.THEN REMOVE TANK.IF HAVE TROUBLE REMOVING FILLER TUBE AT GAS TANK SPRAY WD40 AROUND WHERE FILLER TUBE GOES TO GAS TANK LOOSEN THE CLAMPS AND USE LARGE VISE GRIPS WORK FILLER TUBE HOSE AWAY FROM FUEL TANK SPRAY WD40 INTO IT SLIDE ON OFF.WHEN YOU GET FUEL TANK OFF USE A FUEL PUMP MODULE LOCK RING TOOL TURN LOCK RING COUNTERCLOCK WISE.IF YOU DONT HAVE THE FUEL PUMP LOCK RING TOOL.YOU CAN USE A HAMMER AND BRASS DRIFT OR A PLASTIC DRIFT DONT USE NO METAL DRIFTS OR PUNCH YOU WILL MAKE A SPARK AND HAVE EXPLOSION FROM GAS FUMES BE EXTRA CAREFUL.REPLACE FUEL PUMP SOCK AND FUEL SUPPLY LINES IF STOPPED UP AND REPLACE FUEL FILTER.PUT EVERY THING BACK IN VISA VERSA.IF ALL GOES WELL. GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE BUY A GAS CAP WITH A LOCK SO WHO EVER PUT SUGAR IN YOUR GAS WONT BE ABLE TO TRY IT AGAIN GOOD LUCK.

jack up vehicle remove filler neck hose disconnect wiring harness to pump unhook fuel lines emission lines reomove bolts in holding straps and lower tank,you will see large plastic ring securing pump in tank or a metal locking ring turn counterclockwise lift pump module out of tank

Support the fuel tank, loosen the clamps that hold the tank on, then lower the tank slow because you will have to unhook the fuel lines and the electrical connector before you can lower the tank down very far. Once the tank is removed you will find a lock ring that holds the whole assembly. carefully remove the ring and the pump should be able to be removed. When you put it back together be carefull with the large o ring seal when installing the new pump.

if you have low fuel in tank . take a large floor jack with a piece of ply board on jack saddle a small piece just enough to keep saddle punction a hole in gas tank.make sure you remove charcoal canister the fuel filter.+ fuel supply and return lines remove the exhaust system.place a large container to catch some gas . remove the tank filler hose. take floor jack place it in center of gas tank slowly raise the jack to support gas tank.remove tank straps slowly lower gas tank catch fuel in the container from the tank filler hose. becareful no sparks what so ever you or a time bomb .

Fuel pump is accessed through a hole below the back seat. Remove the seat and there is a rubber round cover over each fuel pump. Fuel pumps are held in place with a large round retaining ring that is screwed off.
