Tranmission problem on 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

I have a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan that I had from new, now it has 70K miles. Yesterday while driving the gear stuck in 2nd I think and will not shift and the Check Engine Light came on. I put it in reverse and back in forward but it still stuck in 2nd gear. I drove home about 25 miles in 2nd gear. Today I started the Van and the problem cannot be reproduced, it gone, the transmissions is running like new. Any one know what may be the issue.

    Thanks for the info.
Do you think taking it to the dealer to have them try and find the problem is wise. Or this is an issue that is very difficult to find if it is not occuring at the time? The Servive Engine Light is still on.

Dear wramlal

I had the same problem, drove home just like you did, took it to my mechanic and he changed the "speed sensor " problem solved. "

When the trans. sticks itself in 2nd gear and stays there is because it's detecting a trans. problem and puts itself in "limp in" mode. When it happens again, to somewhere to have a scan done on the trans. so you can find out which sensor on the trans. is acting up.

The dealer charges way too much money to spend 10 minutes hooking up a scanner and finding out which sensor it is. Call around and find out who has the best deal on hooking up a scanner. You may even find a shop that'll do it for you for free. We do this as a service to our customers, new and continous. Finding out what the code is, is not a difficult thing at all.

Just want to be honest about how the auto repair business works. I do this for a living because I love it and not because I have too. Unfortunately our shop is located in Tacoma, Washington. Hopefully things work out for you there.

Your van will give you the trouble code all by itself. Simply cycle the key on-off-on-off-on and watch the engine light or odometer. In some, the odometer will display the code, in older models, you will have to count the number of times the engine light flashes. Example - two flashes, slight pause, three flashes long pause would be a code 23. Most likely it is the output sensor starting to go bad.

Tranmission stuck

When your check engine light comes on it usually refers to the exhaust system, oxygen or many other sensors that can effect engine use. You need to have this looked at by a professional or you can try yourself. You can go to a local auto part store and pick up a code book and code key to check the onboard computer to find out what the problem is. Please let me know if I can be of more help.

1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, 138000 miles. Loud vibration coming from rear at 40+ miles?

This particular vehicle is front wheel drive and there isn't much on the rear axle, so one thing could be the rear wheels need to be balanced or you have a bent rim. Good Luck.

FIRST INSPECT THE EXTERIOR OF THE TRANSMISSION, CHECK THOROUGHLY INCLUDING THE DIFFERENTIAL MINE WAS SPLIT SO I GOT LUCKY AND ONE WAS GIVEN TO ME SO PLEASE CHECK IT OUT. ALSO SMELL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. BE SURE TO SMELL FRESH FLUID SO YOU GET AN IDEA OF HOW THE FLUID SMELLS. IF IT IS DARK LIKE DINGY AND SMELLS COOKED THEN MY FRIEND IT IS TIME FOR A NEW ONE

It is activated by a temperature switch. It's probably bad. Just runs the fan at any time for no reason or there is a short in that part of the system. I hate that the computor was changed first. Find that sensor and swap it out and see if your problem doesn't go bye bye.

Good luck
