I have a 04 monte carlo with a 3400 v6 engine, 69 thousand miles. when the engine is cold the motor has a rattle for 1 min then goes away. car drives great no other problems, all techs tell me this is common for the gm 3400
If it is like a ticking sound then it is the fuel injectors, but if it is like a slight knock than goes away it is more than likely a cold start(which means the oil has all drained into the pan) which would cause a slight sound and then go away after a bit.

might be worth starting with a wiggle test if you don't have access to any diagnostics. engine running and as suggested, careful of moving parts just go round the engine bay giving the loom/wiring a wiggle to see if you can re-create the fault. Jon
Very common Transmission code - solution # 1 check to be sure Fluid is full . If not trans code sent plus will turn on check engine light or service engine soon . # 2 be sure condition of fluid is Good / Not worn out . Fluid must be Red / Reddish in color Cold and When hot- warm still have red / even lighter than when cold .# 3 if a higher than 50,000 mile car used in heavy rush hour traffic during hot weather then change fluid to give it fresh oil / Trans will fight heat better and save you a $$ 2000 repair bill . # 4 most important of all you can save a Trans by adding Lucas Trans treatment it is $ 20 some places but well worth $$ to extend life of vehicle if one in need of saving $$ .This can even be added to existing fluid if color is still reddish .
The 3100 and 3400 Engine Models have the power steering reservoir located on top of the engine on the passenger side of the vehicle, located directly on top of the power steering pump. The 3800 engine has the power steering pump located on the rear of the engine. you will want to wait until the engine is cold, some of them are a tight squeeze and can cause burns when it's hot. You have to, with the engine OFF, reach back and around and take the cap off to pull out the Cap/Dipstick and check it. Filling it is the tricky part, I have some tubing attached to the end of a funnel I use to Fill them, I currently work at a GM Dealership. Sometimes the wiring runs right on top of the reservoir, and it can be a hassle to get the cap off.
If the code you have is p0420, then it sounds like you mayu have a bad catalytic converter. This will inturn cause the oqygen sensor codes, It may still be under warranty. The warranty is up to 125k miles.
