Sounds like you have a leak that may be due to a bad seal,a bad gasket or a cracked head. When the engine is running. Oil pressure is higher than water pressure. But when the engine is shut off oil pressure goes to zero but water pressure is still at 15 psi. untill the engine cools off. that's when you get water and oil to mix. If you do an oil change you could find water in the oil pan. Doing a water pressure test will verify a leak but won't tell you where.
SOURCE: 96 chevy cavalier just had the water pump replaced
I would make sure your radiator fan it turning on after the temp gets about 120 degrees (turn car off before it gets to the red). Thats was the problem with my 96 cavalier. I was going to get a used one from a junk-yard, but then I found a motor for it at autozone for $5 than a used one. since i had to take mine out anyway, it was easy to just replace the motor and put it back where it belongs. took about 20 minutes (took more time finding the right sized socket for the bolt at the bottom of the fan shroud). If your fan isnt turning on, check the wires going to the fan (with any 12 volt tester) . if the wires test ok (are getting power), you then know it has to be the fan motor. If the wires dont get power, then it may be the relay switch, or the coolent sensor (not telling the computer it's gettting hot). but i'd be willing to bet that it's fan related.
SOURCE: Keep looseing water out of
Most radiator start draining water if there is microscopic leaks or punctures. The system is a sealed unit and is not supposed to drain unless there is huge pressure within due to heating that can release the pressure cap on the radiator to release water to the overflow tank.
So the radiator must be filled and allowed to stand and if there is loss after a day or after the engine is running for sometime , you must check the pressure cap or else there is fault on the radiator ASSUMING that the engine is working normal- timing and tuning in correct condition.
