My son'r 4X4 Ranger 3.0L engine will not start. He let the battery drain down to nothing and the truck has sat still now for about 6 months. We put in a new battery (w/greater cranking power) but still it won't start. We took out the starter and it bench tested good; Turning the key to start - I do NOT hear the fuel pump turn on. If I cross wire the starter relay, the engine will crank but still will not start. Spraying in starter fluid and cross-wiring to crank the engine will start the engine for a second until the starter fluid is used up then it stops running. Seems like an electrical problem stopping the fuel pump from pumping - no fuel, no start. Is there a kill switch somewhere? If so, what position should the switch be in & where is it located? What other electrical problem may be causing this?

    Thanks.

Truck wouldnt start battery was replaced and when i get in before i put key in there is a ticking sound that stops for a few seconds and then starts again and wont turn over although cauges and radio work....

Sounds like either the starter motor is going out or the electrical wiring going to the starter is bad. Take it to a shop and have them inspect it, this problem will only get worse until the car will not start up any more.

With fords you have to have to battery tip top condition (a must).
Now when you refer to the starter solenoid, are you talking about the relay on the passenger side fender well. If so, start there.
With the starter wire or trigger wire disconnected, Start running your tests.
Find out if its something to do with the trigger wire or if it has to do with the relay.

Starter may be bad, or connection to the starter could be corroded or broken. There also may be a fuse, I'm not sure. Locate the starter and try running a jumper wire to it. Mini jumper cables will work. Hook those up to the battery and then run it to the starter. Ground it to a metal part and use the positive side to touch the power connector on the starter. IF the starter kicks, its a connection issue. If it doesnt, replace the starter.

There are braided metallic bands that help ground your engine. They are usually located at the back of the engine going to the firewall. If they are frayed or disconnected in any way it could be causing the starting problem. Check all your wires for loose connections or corrosion. Hope this helps. God bless!

Starter Repair on 2000 Ford Ranger

The easest way to find the starter is to open the hood and have some one crank the engine while you watch. If all else fails follow the positive cable from you battery it may go to the silonoid on the fire wall but the positive cable from the silnoid will go to the starter hope this helps
