Question about 2001 Toyota Prius

1 Answer

Doesn't start When I key the engine to start it, the instrument panel, which normally lights up immediately, initially showed the P, R, D, B light, which then faded out after repeated attempts to start the engine. After some poking around under the hood, we noted a vibrating noise coming from the central relay panel, and isolated the noise to the pink ABS relay plugged in on the extreme left side of the relay box (the one placed in the back middle of the engine compartment. The car never started. Any ideas?

2003 Toyota Avalon xls model all lights and dials on instrument panel go off and engine stops when I go over bumps. I wait 2 minutes and car starts up again and runs fine until I go over bumps again.

The very first thing I would check would be if the battery cables are clean and tight. After that I'd lean towards a bad ignition switch. Do you have a ton of keys on your keyring? wiggle your key while its on to see if you can recreate the problem.

Driving along lights dimmed, instrument panel died, loss of power then engine cut out & wouldn't start. Starts with a jump but when i turn key to heat glow plug, instrument panel goes mad

I assume there's a problem with alternator. Check the grounding to engine, check continuity of a positive wire between alternator and battery. the energizing voltage should be checked as well. Might be the bad connection between battery and vehicle body grounding. Diesel cars are sensitive even in a little loss of connection and rust in the connection points.

I can't say 100%, but as far as I know, there are a number of lights that come on when starting a car. The alternator light is one of them. Is it possible that you never noticed it before? On my car, the check engine light comes on, the engine trouble light comes on, the seat belt light comes on, the air bag light comes on, the abs brakes light comes on and there are probably others.
I think what you are seeing is normal.
Do you have any problems? Is the battery dying? Is the car stalling? If not, you are probably OK.

i would check for loose or broken grounds to the dash on the fire wall (located under the hood by wiper motor/hvac assembly) also sometimes the instrument cluster gets dirty/loose connection. if so remove cluster and clean connectors and reassemble. try the grounds first.

Changed spark plugs, runs rough, check engine light is on

could be many of things. you gotta know what code is showing up to triger that light. you can have a mechanic give you the code or you can try to do it on your own.
  • On many 2001 and newer models, holding in the trip odometer reset button while turning the key to RUN will start a self test, with a readout on the odometer. It will also activate all instrument panels, one at a time. We do not know if this will show computer codes, or whether it only tests the instrument panels. At the end, it may show a few odd codes that are firmware versions and not error codes.
  • On most cars, the codes will read out if the engine light is on - all you have to do is put the key into the RUN position.
  • Normally, to get codes, you put the key on OFF and then rapidly do OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (on some cars you have to do four or five, not three, OFF-ON cycles). On our test 2002 car, the key did not go back to unlock, so it was ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON.
    • You may have to have the parking brake firmly set for the codes to show!

Install remote/key into socket.  Push and hold trip button on instrument cluster with all doors shut.  Push start button one time for key position one while holding trip button and count to five.  keep holding trip button and hit start button to key position two where all the warning lites come on the instrument cluster while still holding trip button.  Count to around ten and triangular warning lite should flash. Release button and remove key and then start engine.  May take a few attempts to reset this lite.
