Question about 1988 Ford F 250

1988 F-250 460 engine stalls when dribing down the road

My 460 will be running fine, then start to cut out and stall. I've replaced 2 of 3 fuel pumps. It also has a fresh tune up, any ideas on what would be causing it to stall and die? about an hour later it will start again.

We have a similar problem, when the outside temp reaches 95-100 degrees the engine will sputter and die. Let it sit for a few minutes to a half hour and it will start again and run briefly. We have changed the in tank pump, the frame rail pump, the pump relays and the coil. All seem to give it a temporary fix but the problem comes up again. If you let the truck sit and idle the problem will arrise within about 20 minutes. During the winter fall and spring we don't have this problem.

I have an Ford F350 superduty. I have replaced the spark plugs, checked the rotor, changed the oil. When I start the truck, it will run for about 20-30 seconds and then will cut out. If I try to restart it, it won't start. If I wait for a half hour or so and try to start the truck, it starts, but repeats by quitting after about 20-30 seconds.

    Any thoughts?

    thank you,

On older, carbureted engines, cold stalling (and hard starting) is most often due to an automatic choke that is sticking, misadjusted or broken. Cleaning the choke mechanism with aerosol carburetor cleaner may free up the choke allowing it to work properly again. If the choke housing as an electrical heating element, the element may not be receiving voltage when the key is on, or the element may have burned out (check resistance with an ohmmeter).

Other causes of stalling with a carburetor include an idle speed adjustment screw that is set too low (turn screw to increase idle speed rpm). The engine may stall if the idle fuel mixture screw(s) are not adjusted correctly or the idle mixture port(s) are dirty or clogged with fuel varnish deposits (clean the carburetor and readjust the idle mixture screws for smoothest idle). Stalling can also occur is there are vacuum leaks in the carburetor, under the carburetor (bad base gasket), or any vacuum hose connections to the carburetor or intake manifold

All 1988 460 automotive fords were fuel injected. Carb Solutions do not apply.
Use FI troubleshooting techniques. Does it fail due to fuel or voltage?
Jumper the fuel pump pin in the computer access connector and verify pressure when the thing stalls out.
The computer will turn off the fuel pumps when the engine is not running unless in the start position or the fp pin is jumpered.
Old totally electric engines cost more to repair than they are worth unless you do it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1991 dodge ramcharger 318 engine stalls driving down road. shut key off for a few seconds starts right back up and runs fine. any ideas?

It's losing one of two things - fuel or electricity. I would check and or replace the fuel pump and fuel filter first.

I stalled a fuel pump on 2002 GMC Sonoma 4 cyl. She stared right upI installed a fuel pump on my 2002 GMC Sonome engine 4 cyl. It started righd not startet up. But, after driven 2 miles, stalled

It is very important to look at the four pin connector that plugs onto fuel tank sending unit the hot wire that runs the pump gets loose and burn the connector making intermittent connection they make a replacement plug for this problem also check the connections on the inside i have those fail once.

92 dodge dakota stalling,running rough,loss of power

Did you replace the fuel filter when you replaced the pump ?
Was it running rough before the pump was replaced.
Did you replace the cap and rotor too ?
"Sucking a ton of air" could be a vac leak, or the sound of the throttle open when the engine is bogging down.
Is the check engine light on when it is running ?

My car will not start up and stay running it cuts off after a split second I've been told its my fuel pump went I know I need new plugs do you think that might be it a tune up?

Right after the car stalls, look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY. This is an indicator that you have a failing antitheft system. When the system fails, the car mistakenly thinks it's being stolen, and turns off the injectors in 5 seconds or less, thus stalling the vehicle. Very common problem on GM vehicles. This link explains the problem and offers solutions.

Fuel problems

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator is stuck in the open position.I am trying to remember if this engine(Vortec?)has a return line to the tank.If it does, try disconnecting the return(smaller) line, and use something to plug the fitting on the outlet of the fuel on the intake(Use a piece of fuel hose and a bolt_make sure you use a hose clamp,as there is 50 PSI of pressure)

'99 Chrysler T&C van stalls without warning but starts right back up with no problem. nothing registers on computer. replaced fuel filter, had tune up. Still stalls every now and then. Stalled 8...

When was last tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters especially fuel filter? I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it. Also avoid cheap fuel - lot of questionable fuel at cheap/cut rate stations.
