Question about 2001 Volvo S40

2 Answers

2001 Volvo s40/ takes 5-10 seconds to start.

I have to pump the gas to start the car. It has plenty of zip, so I don't think it's the spark plugs. Someone suggested that it may be the fuel filter, but I cannot locate it, any suggestions?

I have a 2001 volvo s40. When I accelerate hard, my engine coughs a bit before it accelerates, but if i accelerate sloe and smooth, nothing happens. Also , the check engine light would flash when it coughs, then eventually goes out. Any ideas on what's wrong?

I have a Volvo s40 turbo, year 2000. It is difficult to start at both cold and warm. Once it is started, it runs well. I need to crank it two time and pump a bit of fuel in order to get it started. The mechanics at a Volvo service changed the thermal-stat in the coolant, cleaned one of the air valve, it still didn’t help. Any ideas?

    Same car, same problem.

We have a local talk show mechanic who recommends using a fuel additive because it could be intake valve deposits. These deposits soak up fuel till they saturate. Hence the long crank times when the engine is cold. He recommends a " fuel injector / intake valve cleaner".

I have used 1 bottle so far and it seems to be working.

I had the head gasket, fuel lines, fuel filter, and spark plugs replaced. It started before the work was done, but now it won't. It just cranks. I can hear a buzzing from the gas tank, I am guessing it is the fuel pump. The car has sat for about 5 years before it was given to me.

Fuel filter is at right side of gas tank undernieth car
by pumping the gas all you are doing is opening the throttle plates alowing some air.its not uncomin for injection cars with higher mileage to need alittle more air for start up.
check ECT sensor.
clean throttle plates
is check engine light on?

I have the same prolem with 10-15sec start, have to keep the throttle in then crank engine to start. Found I dont have to keep the throttle in. Only need time cranking to start. My best way forward would be to replace the fuel pressure regulator. The vacuum pipe also came loose that cause misfiring and engine stalls. Apart from that the engine run perfect.

Volvo s40 white smoke and jerking, can it be plug coil problem?

It could be a coil. Or it could be a fuel injector. Also. Record your gas mileage by filling the car up and recording the number of gallons that the gas tank took. Reset the trip odometer and drive as normal. At the next fill record how much fuel again went into the gas tank. divide the gallons of gas at the second fill with the miles driven and that will be your mpg average. If your getting anything lower than 19 it's probably a fuel problem and should be taken to a different mechanic for a second opinion.

Lack of power

for starters: check clogged fuel filter, check fuel pressure, check for dirty air filter, and check for spark in spark plugs.
