4 cylinder model the EGR valve is located between 2 & 3 cylinder on intake manifold and between Carb and valve cover it has a diaphragm cover about 3 inches round and one vacuum hose 2 bolts holds it to the intake. V-6 models EGR valve is located on drivers side of engine just behind carb and about the same size and roundness and one hose two bolts.

Hi, i have a 1986 el camino v-8 auto, it shifts weird sometimes

Test the vacuum modulator and check the vacuum line going to it. Heat from the exhaust manifold tends to dry up the vacuum hose connected to it. Age takes its toll too on the modulator too.

My 1987 El Camino stalls when stopping at a stop light (below 5 miles per hour) after it has been driven 20 or more miles. It is equiped with a carberated 305 V8 with automatic transmission.. Starts up...

Does it feel like the engine is stalling or the transmission is not disengaging? You may have a transmission or toque converter problem. If it is your engine you may have an EGR valve issue or an Idle air control issue.

I have a 1979 El Camino. I need to install a EGR valve. Can you tell me where the vacuum hose connects to from the EGR valve?

There should be a vacuum diagram under the hood but if it's gone the EGR hooks to the purple topped vacum port. I think that's the one on the thermostat housing, if I remember right. The other vacuum port should have a red and white restrictor valve in one of the lines and that is the wrong one. The other line from it goes to the bottom left on the carburator. If you don't have any of that stuff, and that's possible, then it needs to have manifold vacuum so hook it direct to the carb or the manifold on an available nipple. Hope this helps.

1984 305 El Camino / stock, was running fine, now it stalls when I get off the freeway at stop sign. After a short while it will start again but acts like it is choking.

Check your accelerator pump. It's on the side of the carburetor, near where the fuel line enters. It costs about $10 to replace but it causes a lot of headaches.

Pulling check engine codes on 1984 el camino

Locate your aldl connector under dash near steering column. It should have 12 pin connector. Older cars had 8 pin connector. You can do either one. On 12 pin connector jump the last 2 pins, on top row, in connector with paperclip or wire. Turn on ignition till check engine light turns on. Count & write down how many times it flashes. It will flash for example 3 times stop then 1 time = 31 code. In older 8 pin connector jump the 2nd & 4th pins on top.

Normal city driving presents no overheating problems--- sustained highway driving of speeds above 60 mph has the engine temperture climbing into the 220 degree range -installed new water pump,radiator,and...

if you are certain that the head gaskets are good and the heads aren't cracked (they like to crack between valves) Id check the egr system...if it is blocked it can cause the engine run hotter (valve itself may be good but manifold passage may be full of carbon), as can retarded timing.(easy way to test is to just advance it a few degrees and see if temp changes) Have a hydrocarbon test done at the radiator...any combustion gasses present in there will tell you if head or gasket is leaking. If leak is small, it may only show up at higher rpms because it does not have time to escape.
Also...have you checked and verified that the gauge is accurate? Is it actually boiling over and pushing coolant out? If you have a 50/50 coolant mix, you should not be boiling at that temp. (with the right cap pressure) It is also important that the air flow is unobstructed...make sure that the a/c condenser is not plugged up with bugs or other debris. If it is, it's the same as putting cardboard in front of the radiator.
