You need to have an oil change and you need to have your oil filter changed.

It means it is burning oil in the engine, how many miles on the clock?

Black smoke is due to a air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering
too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough air.
    Causes for black smoke are

    • Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000
      miles)

    • Faulty injector pump

    • Dirty air cleaner

    • Turbocharger or intercooler faulty

    • Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust
      gas recycling unit)
If car is over 200.000 miles it can be a major problem with the engine(cylinder head or valves gone).
Best thing to do is having a thorough checkup at an authorized garage

Have a 2004 toyota carolla 2ltr d4d , it looses power when the engine is close to full heat , no turbo and loads of black smoke , have changed egr maf , full service , intercooler cleand stil hav prob

loads of black smoke, loss of power and heating all indicate a faulty turbo--not winding up to provide the air flow required
check turbo actuator got the turbine vanes
Take it to a turbo repair shop and have it tested.

By changing gears I've got smoke coming from my exchaust: what can I do to prevent it. What Oil is best for my TDI. Can I use fuel injector oil with the diesel.

Identifing the smoke color tells you where it is coming from. Black smoke comes from fuel, so it is running rich or not fully igniting the mixture. White smoke comes from oil and often happens under very heavy engine load. On acceleration this could be the piston rings allowing blow-by, on deceleration this could be the valve seals leaking. Blueish smoke is often coolant, indicating a head gasket leak.

You didn't state iof this happens during a moving gear change, or if it has happened since you physically changed some of the gears in the car. On a TDi, I would follow the factory recommendations for all engine lubricants and additives.

Ensure air filter is clean ensure diesel filter changed if this don't cure it pump may need recalibrating.

Have had the pump/cam belt's changed ? simply because if you have you only need to be one tooth out on the pump & this kind of problem occur's best of luck.

Hope helps.

Lots of black smoke, not the best power

Check the breather filter, a quick test is pull the oil dipstick and rev engine if oil rises up dipstick replace breather filter straight away as it will blow engine if not
