STOP! Don't spend hundreds of $$ or ££ on an entire new regulator mechanism. It's probably not necessary.

There's a weak part in the design. It's the bit which links the steel cable to the window. They are plastic and they tend to break, leaving one side of the window unsupported (or at least un-driven).

Audi have redesigned the part, making it stronger (now with a metal reinforcement). In the UK, the cost of the part is about £1.60 ($2.60). You can even replace the part WITHOUT removing the regulator mechanism. The part number is 4B0-837-463-B. (Don't miss the -B).

I thank the good people at for the help.

Also: (This describes another method, which involves taking the mechanism off).

My own tip: If you're doing it without removing the works, get the new part and run the screw into the fixing hole to form a thread BEFORE you try to do it on the car.

Disclaimer: This worked on my '99 A6. No responsibilty if you should break your window, trap your fingers, drop a screwdriver on your toes etc.

My 2001 Audi A6 had the same problem. I looked up an Independent Audi repair shop and saved big bucks compared to the dealer. The part number for my regulator is 4B0 837 461 and it cost $172. Out the door with labor $369. Oakland CA.

It's probably the regulator. I don't know whether the A6 uses the same part as the A4, but if so, I have a spare regulator in my garage that is available. I'll see if I can find out whether they use the same part number or not and will let you know (if I can find information online, I'll post the links so that you can see they're the same or different).

Audi a4 1.8t windows, interior light wing mirrors not working

Folks, Just found my problem ...... There's a flexible conduit (corrugated rubber sleeve) between the driver's door and the door arch which contains the wiring loom for the drivers door central locking/door speaker/electric windows/mirrors etc....discovered when I slipped off the sleeve that 4 cables in the wiring loom had broken due to repeated flexing when drivers door was opened/closed over the years (2001 Audi A4). Resoldered broken wires and insulated working better than ever again dashboard back lighting seems brighter than it had been for some time? Also drivers door loudspeaker is back in action again (hadn't noticed that it had gone).
It's kinda difficult to reseat the rubber sleeving correctly after the repair job...will probably use some silicone sealant on the sleeve to ensure that there is no water ingress to wiring loom afterwards. I'm not too impressed with Audi design people after that, should have used cable that has a better flexibility rating (esp on drivers door!).
