Starter problems my car has an intermittent starting fault, it can be ok for days then will not start on the key, the dash lights etc are ok, and it will go with a small roll and bump start, a local garage has cleaned the connections on the starter etc and said it should be fine, but it still keeps happening . i dont want to fork out for a new starter if that is not the problem

have got same problem runs ok for weeks then absolutely nothing. charged battery other day car started first time then tried again ignition lights all light up but nothing happens not even engine turning over, just about hear solenoid on starter?

My Ford Escort can run fine for weeks, then, after a journey, either long or short, it will not start. The lights and radio etc come on, but there is no sound at all on turning the key. I then have to wait between 10 minutes and an hour, and then it will start again. It happens in all weathers, but never first thing in a morning - only after a run. It can happen once in a month, or (like today) three times in one day. Then, it can go weeks and no problem, and I assume the problem has gone away, only for it to happen out of the blue again. We've checked the battery and spark plugs etc.

Checkyour ignition coil ?

and have your starter looked at or it could be a fault with the ecu

I have had to replace the ignition switch 3 times since 12/2006. Might want to have them look at that...

My non-start fault is not constant or consistant.

The car is a C class diesel automatic which will not start, despite charging the battery and refitting it. the dash lights are intermittent and electronic key will not move past position 2

You basically answered your own question. your problem would be the ignition switch.. If you have push button start, this would be different. It would have to go on a scanner to find the problem. Or at least where to start looking.

What causes intermittent starting?

sounds like a parasitic load on your battery. it will drain voltage from your battery continuously at a slow rate so while car is sitting over night it is drained but when you get it started in day the alternator is able to maintain battery voltage. could be something as simple as a visor light not turning off when closed or glove box light not turning off when closed or alarm system drawing excessive power.

Sounds like a bad starter solonoid, you can have this tested with a volt meter when it will not start.Bad solonoids tend to work part of the time, just like the symptoms you have listed.

Intermittent non-start. No power to starter motor

sounds like the park pawl switck assembly located in the selector assembly in the car or on the side of the transmission could just be out of adjustment

My 2005 auto 535d wont start or even turn over at all, the battery is charged and all the dash/lights etc come on although we did discover a pool of water in the battery tray (is this common?) but this...

Hi the problem your having is going to be with the starter motor if when you turn the key the cars engine dont turn over at all you might here a faint clicking sound as you try turning the key to start the car, if the car is totally dead and the battery is good then this indicates that the starter motor is at fault.

You could try giving the starter motor a few hard hits with an hammer this often frees up the starter allowing you to start the car but it might take a few hard hits just to get it working this is not a permanent fix doing this it might get the car started but after a while the problem will come back so replacing the starter is the only long term option.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

check/clean battery terminals, if ok check starter wires for voltage(while turning key to start) and tightening or corrosion. If all check out ok replace the starter. If you have no voltage at the starter check your relays and ignition switch. Hopefully this helps
