1995 mercury sable GS 3.8L ignition problems?

The car starts fine, but the key wont turn it off, so I have to shut it off by unplugging the distributor plug, then diconnecting battery or the lights stays on as if its stuck in the forward position, the steering lock doesnt work either when I pull the key out. I have looked all over the internet and come down to 4 possibilities. 1 is the Ignition Switch, 2 Control Module-Ignition, 3 Lock - Ignition (Cylinder & Keys), and 4 the column. (The rod is the part that is moved by the key to activate the electric switch) Any help would be appreciated

Since I posted this I have figured out the problem by myself with hours of research on the internet and just looking myself into it. Sigh! it's a shame with billions of people with the internet and nobody could just give me a better answer than "i have too" For anybody who has this problem just take it to the ford dealership for about 200.00 they will replace the Plastic actuator/rod/ in the steering column it's a piece of plastic that moves the ignition switch into the position. Basically if it breaks you can start your car but not shut it off. The key will spin back freely. Even though I did replace the key lock and the ignition switch no harm done, just 30.00 more dollars outta my pocket! If your car doesn't start then it more then likely might be ignition switch. Last thing, I can care less about fixing the steering lock, it's just an anti theft device, and if they want that car that bad come and get it. I got full coverage!

Glad you got it fixed. I had the same problem a couple years ago. I, too, replaced the ignition cylinder to the same result. I took it to my usual repair guy, but I don't remember how much it cost. Less than $200, if I remember right. I actually pulled a fuse from the panel under the hood to get the car to shut off.

I have a 1995 Mercury Sable GS, recently, when we turn off the key, the cooling fan continues to run. I have replaced the fan over a year ago, and have had other work done to it. according to the manual,...

under the hood there are two 30 amp relays, one is for the fan the other is for the a/c fan, swap them and see if corrects the problem, if it does then the relay is bad. Hope this helped Tim

try to check if the starter relay clicking while you start. If no maybe bad connection from ignition key. If the relay clicking maybe the connection to starter or the starter itself is damaged. try to direct the sol. of starter to batt. positive if it kick your starter is good.

1999Mercury Sable died...acts like battery dead or alternator, however with key off there is a click, click sound and as soon as you giggle ignition and make sound stop ...there is power but as soon as you turn key on it all goes dead again.. battery takes a charge and don't think its an alternator problem.. think it is a relay switch...possibly the windshield wipers.. have noticed that the wipers turned on for no reason a couple of times and once again when I was messing with this situation
