The t-stat is under the timing cover below the cam gears there is a housing that also has the coolant temp sensor attatched.over heating also ruins the temp sensor and the temp gauge wont work.
I have replaced the t-stat, temp sensor on a 99 s80 t6 and it still overheats.I also replaced the head gasket and had head check and it was warped but no cracks but still overheats and needs another temp sensor.when i find the cause i'll post it.
