Transmission Shifting Problem, 1995 Seville with Northstar and approx. 70,000 miles

"Service Engine" display has been staying on most of the time. Coinciding with that display the transmission shifts abruptly. A transmission shop said "your transmission is broke. It'll cost you $2,000 to repair. Since the problem doesn't always appear could there be another problem such as a poor electrical connection external to the transmission.

Another problem has been difficulty moving the shifter from park. As of this morning (6/21/08) I have not been able to shift from park at all so the car sits helpless in my garage.

Because of high gas prices I haven't been driving the car much; however, I still need the car occasionally and would like to use it if repairs are reasonable in cost (In my present situation $2,000 isn't reasonable.). Could the two problems I mentioned be two symptoms of one problem rather than separate problems?

I have a '91 deville with 70k. The digital speedometer fluxuates sometimes goes to 0mph. The transmission shifting follows the speedometer. My local mechanic replaced the vss twice. First time it lasted 1...

I don't believe the problem is in the vehicle speed sensor. I suspect the problem may be the computer. The speed sensor is just a magnet inside the transmission with an induction coil outside to create an electrical signal every time the transmission output shaft turns. That signal goes to the computer and the computer tells the transmission when and how to shift and displays the speed on your electronic display. I would start by having a reputable transmission shop check out the transmission, then take it to a good mechanic to have him check the computer. It is a relatively expensive fix, but with only 70,000 miles on the Caddy, it should be worth it.

Removal of transmission

Yes, most front wheel drive vehicles need to have the subframe removed in order to removed the transmission and this is no exception. Are you sure this is a 4t-60, I thought it was a 4t-80. I could be thinking of a different year I guess.
