Oil light ON is not good to drive with!! propable causes are either: No Oil, Defected Oil pump, bad sensor, very bad Oil filter..... or stupid indicator! check them stepwise

    - As U have plenty of Oil... of course make sure it is the right grade (recommended by Toyota).
    - Do you have an oil pressure indicator on your panel: if Yes where it points?
    - when you start engine do you hear any sounds upper part of the engine: Tik Tik Tik, or louder sound inside? if Yes: change oil filter and check, if still exist means you have a problem with the Oil Pump and go directly to dealer or technician
    - If no sounds, pressure indicator no on Zero, Engine temp is normal.... means you have a problem with either sensor or faulty signal.. just need scan the system

The oil light in my 1985 Mazda 626 keeps coming on although there is plenty of oil in the engine. I checked and topped the oil up less than a week ago (before a road trip) and today the oil light came on....

The oil light will come on with low oil pressure (it is most likely a faulty / blocked sensor). This could be a simple sensor fault or blocked pick-up or a problem with your pump. I would get it checked out - if the oil pick-up needs to be replaced or cleaned the sump would need to be removed. A quick visual is to open where you top up the oil and see if you can see no oil at the top of your engine if there is very little or none then it is definitely the pick-up and don't drive the car as you will cause wear. If you start your engine you should see oil "sloshing" in the top end - again if there is none then there is no lubrication for the top end.

Oil pressure light on - plenty of oil i n engine

it sounds like the bad oil pump to me, before you replace the oil pump one more thing you need to check. If your car is a automatic transmission

1. check the oil pressure switch
2. change the transmission fluid and fiter,
hope this can help.

Oil light comes on when idling. has plenty oil & was recently changed with new filter

The oil light means that the oil pressure is to low. This is a bad problem, with big expensive fixes. Don't drive to long without getting it checked, or trade for another.

Dodge caravan '98, oil light on, plenty of oil

If the engine is not making any knocking type noises, check the oil pressure sending unit. If it is leaking oil then it needs to be replaced along with removing the rubber plug from the connector and cleaning the terminals. If the oil light still comes on then the oil pressure is definately low and could cause engine failure.
